I took an Uber to the airport on May 18th of this year and the driver told me it was still illegal to pick up or drop off at the airport. He dropped me off at the very beginning of the ramp that goes up to the entrance so nobody would notice. I have heard that you can get an Uber from the airport, but I am not sure where they pick you up. I also heard that the airport wifi has blocked Uber so I guess you would need your own data. I paid right at 15 USD so if you are on a budget, it is about half price. I have also heard the drivers prefer you to sit in front, so it doesn't appear as you are a client.

I use Uber regularly for arrivals and departures. When you book an Uber you can see the drivers name and description of the car. When they arrive I give a big wave and a Hola (name) como estas. Yes always get in front. They always appreciate this and so far it has worked fine. I also text them the door number so they know where to pick me up. They do seem to prefer the far end for pickups and the first one for drop off. At the far end you seldom see any police and even less that you will see a taxi. If anybody is watching they should get the impression it was a bud picking you up.

Uber is much better for going and coming to the airport. It is a big difference in price and very reliable. Literally half price.

You have to walk up to the departures area and then call for the Uber.

When leaving the airport the driver will usually direct you to go to the fourth (last) crosswalk out front of the departures area.

This all great to know for when I return next month after almost a 3 year hiatus.

I have Google Fi cell service so should be able to get an Uber shortly after I clear customs then go upstairs, turn right and head to the departure area.

Uber drivers generally also so much nicer and appreciative than the airport taxistas. Pay half and get double or quadruple the service. Like visiting an MP versus picking up a hardened puta from one of the takeout places.

Or the opposite...hardened puta from an MP versus a nice one from one of the takeout places. Equally likely in my opinion. YMMV

Unless a fav is picking me up, I usually take an airport taxi from SJO to my hotel. It's quick and convenient given the drivers are waiting for passengers inside baggage claim. Hand my carry on to the driver, get escorted out to his taxi, and immediately get on the road to SJO... easy peasy. Last thing I want to do after a flight down is to wait on an Uber. 8)

That said: I switch to Uber for the rest of the trip, including back to the airport when I leave. Convenient and these days available all over the GAM.

Best of both worlds.

Yep thanks a lot cheaper than taxi. Just exit to the right go up to the main road
and choose the option near bus stop. The driver did say uber really wasn't allowed in arrival area.

I walk out of departures, cross the street to the parking garage, follow the side walk around the parking garage to front of it where the bus stops are. I call an Uber from there…

It not an issue, you just will probably not get picked up in arrival area. I been going soo many times, I know many of the red taxi drivers and the price is not that much more. I prefer to talk to a past taxi driver buddy than get an Uber but that's just me. I go 3-4 times a year and usually one of my old buddies is still doing taxi. Last two trips though my one of my woman been coming pick me up though. They like the beat the line and claim dibs.
