Will be at SL April 19-23 for the first time in San Jose since 2014. I am a breakfast and dinner eater mostly. Other than SL itself, what is the best breakfast joint within walking distance? I remember having a good breakfast at the Dunn Inn a time or two. Other than Castillo, SL and LaAmistad, anything near? Good coffee? I know there are some good places near Hotel Presedente, but since I am solo, I prefer staying near home base. Thanks a lot.

Cafe Amon down from the Castilo is good and the owners are very welcoming as well.

The restaurant if still open across from La Amistad is decent as well .... La Esquinita de jm

Cafe Meil is good for sweets and coffee drinkers which is just around the corner from the SL

Also, La Criolitta or Cafe Otoya on Av 7 and a bunch of places on Av 9 by Hospital Calderon. My favorites are Cafe del Barista and Trigo Miel.

At Criolitta, sit near the aviary.

Cafe Mundo is just around the corner from SL and LA, pretty good menu and they usually have a great fresh fish selection.

If you are looking for a good breakfast or lunch at a reasonable price just walk up the street toward the Hotel Amistad. Keep going until the street dead-ends into the hospital. On the corner on the right is a good bakery with good coffee. Or keep going down the road to the right and there are many sodas that cater to the locals that work in the area or are visiting the hospital that serve breakfast and lunch at cheap prices.

The name is Mister Pan Cafeteria/Bakery. Hours are 6am-7pm Monday-Friday, not sure what time they open on weekends, but close at 6pm on Saturday and Sunday.
Excellent steaming hot cup of coffee for 800 colones.

I always enjoy eating at the Cafe Mundo at least once a trip. I walked out of there about 8pm one night and started walking up the hill to SL. There was no one around when I heard the brakes of a car squeaking as it was trying to stop. The passenger was waiting to open the door as he couldn't get out until it stopped. I started walking as fast as I could to get to the SL. When I got to the top of the hill and crossed the street, I turned around and the passenger was walking fast toward me. I knew I was safe cause I was just outside the SL, so the passenger turned away from me and the guy driving the car came around the corner and picked him up. So it was a close call and a reminder to be aware.

La Criolitta has become my favorite local restaurant in SJ. I Love that place.
