Much is being said about taxi drivers shutting down the meter before you reach the drop off point, however I want to rescue an advice from Hand Solo which is a great idea that I have done myself and seems to work just fine, obviously always keeping track of the meter too.

You know that taxi drives try and will take advantage of you when you ask them to take to any nigh club/restaurant/MP or any other major place, ie. "El Pueblo"

I don't mean to scare you or anything but Taxi drivers and bus drivers are the worst here, since the have the capabilty to communicate by radio with other, if you happen to encounter a major problem with then, you will find yourself surrounded by many of them within minutes.

Best thing to do, get the closest address possible to the place you are going without letting the cab driver know exactly where you are going.

Therefore if you guys feel. post places and will gladly respond back with the closest TICO direction.

Example.

Zona Blue. Edificio del INVU, barrio Amon. Zona Blue is just acrros from it.
Oasis = Avenida 2da, calle 32, Paseo Colón, Resaturante Machu Picchu

One time I was staying at a hotel outside of the Gulch, and the taxi driver kept telling me the Del Rey was closed. He kept trying to persuade me to go to a strip club (Olympus?). He must have thought I was a newbie. After about five minutes of his bullshit, I told him to take me to the Colonial.

Make sure they turn on the meter always and keep an eye on it.

I took many cab rides between the Europa hotel and the delrey and depending on traffic it costs anywhere between 285-400 colones.

On one particular cab ride the meter jumped from the intial 285 colones to 660 colones, I told the cab ride you liar, I am not paying 660 colones and gave him 350 colones instead.

I also took a cab ride to the airport and the cabbie says $15, of course I responded with I will pay you $12 or 5500 colones.

Mente,

I started doing that 3 years ago. I always give an address right next to where I want to go.....ie...Casino Colonial for the D.R. or Machu Pichu Rest. for Oasis. I don't need a cabbie knowing what i'm up to especially when I've found atleast 40% are dishonest.
