Is this a problem? I don't understand what the problem is. It's been that way for years here.

In the US it is common NOT to set up a PIN on Credit Cards. They are only needed if making a cash advance (ATM withdrawl) which carries a steep interest rate with no 'grace period'. With most cards you can set the PINs online, but that might be awkward if you first encounter it buying liquor at the duty free.

Ah, Ok. I didn't know that. We have had to use our pins here for a few years - in Canada. For online purchases not the same, but for stores or transactions directly with the card either pin or for smaller amounts where the merchant is willing to take some risk, tap. Day to day now since Covid almost everything is tap as merchants increased their acceptance of tap up to a few hundred dollars in most cases due to Covid. No need for anyone to touch the card that way.

But anyway, pin requirement not to be feared. Tap is a bit more risky in my opinion

And the Central Bank just delayed the PIN implementation until at least May. Welcome to Costa Rica.

QCostaRica will probably publish an English translation soon.

The referenced articles specify retail stores and services. Is it safe to assume no PIN required for hotels?

I was puzzled last time I was in SL, sometimes they needed my pin. Other times they had me sign. Other times they just used tap. With my Visa. Other than Costa Rica it has been a long time since I signed a slip for a Visa charge, and I didn't know it was an option any more.

So for those that do not have a pin, do you have an option to set one up with your card, and do your cards have the embedded chip?

Just got a new pin for the credit card that I would be using in CR in anticipation for having to use it in hotels and restaurants, I have never had to use it before anywhere. I guess we won't have to use it till May per Boynton's post.

Just created a PIN in the event it is needed. Hats off to Boyton for warding off another nuisance.

Bumping this thread..
any updates..???????? phasing it in May 1st
the way I understand this applies only to Costa Rican banks.
American Express and U.S. banks will still just need a swipe of the card or chip read..????

Will be either tap, or insert card into reader and enter pin number.

The pin only applies to purchases more than 30 mil. If it is ever implemented. It will be a mess. I recently saw an ad from Scotia bank letting clients know how to get a pin.
