I used to exchange money at del ray mostly but with it being closed, I am not which shop(s) are best to exchange USD, Euros and CAD. Do you have any recommendations? I prefer not to do it at casinos etc. Thanks |

Use an ATM at the airport or near your hotel with your debit card. They offer the best exchange rates. If you have foreign cash someone else can advise you where to exchange it. Definitely not the airport. They are extremely high. |

He is usually there after dark. Short, tanned dude walks with a shuffle. ![]() |

If Juan's not there, look for Carlos. Maria's cousin. Almost as good as Juan. |

Colonial casino seemed to have very good rates when I was there last month. You can only exchange $200 US to colones at a time. |

I only ever have to exchange dollars, but I use the bank in the 2nd floor of the INS building. It's a short walk from Sportsmans. You'll have to take off any hat or sunglasses. I don't know if they will take other currencies, but I would guess that Euros and Canadian dollars are fairly common to be exchanged in CR. |

The tallest building downtown is I believe Banco Nacional, Just keep walking down Avenida Central from the HDR. I have exchanged Mexican pesos and US dollars into colones there. You need to show your passport. I tried to exchange Japanese yen but without success. |

On a somewhat more relevant note, paper currency in Costa Rica has been being replaced with polymer (plastic) currency for some time. Beginning next year, the paper stuff will be phased out and not accepted as payment. It will be able to be exchanged at banks. Timing January 1, 2022 : Paper c50mil and c20mil March 1, 2022 : Paper c5mil May 1, 2022 : Paper c2mil Mid October : Paper c1mil and c10mil https://www.crhoy.com/nacionales/billet ... as-fechas/ The take away is that people what take colones home thinking they will use them on a future visit should make sure they have the polymer bills. Going to a bank to exchange them will be a hassle. |

Airports and hotels are the last places to go for a good exchange. Try the Scotia Bank at the Plaze de La Cultura |
