Great news. Thanks for the update

In August I was not unable to upload a photo copy of my vaccine card. The QR code would generate with the Covid insurance only.

I assume a hardcopy of the vaccination record will suffice for restaurants and casinos.

Not the way I read it. QR Codes will be required of everyone, residents and citizens. The system will br based on scanning the code.

BTW, a photo of mine uploaded fine in mid-August.

They still haven’t determined what the policy with be for U.S. tourists in regards to showing their vaccination status.



Starting December 1, 2021, Costa Rica will require the Covid-19 vaccine in order to enter most commercial centers and to participate in many public activities.


Establishments requiring vaccination will include: Restaurants, bars, casinos, commercial centers, museums, gyms, hotels, adventure tourism, theaters, sites of worship and sporting events:


Essential services (e.g. supermarkets, pharmacies) are not included in the nationwide vaccine mandate.


As Costa Rica begins mandating the Covid-19 vaccine, it will ease capacity restrictions at most businesses and will begin allowing more mass events with in-person attendance, including concerts and sporting events.

“We have to give time for the people who remain to get their two vaccines,” said President Carlos Alvarado. “As of December 1, there will be no excuse.”


Vaccine status will be verified via a digital form or mobile-phone application that will be made available in November. The QR code will not require an ongoing internet connection, and it can also be printed.

Costa Ricans who got vaccinated abroad can submit a sworn declaration to the Health Ministry in order to receive their QR code. Ch*ldren under 12 years old will not need a vaccine to enter businesses, though that may change at a later date if shots are authorized for that population.

As a reminder: As of Friday, October 15, all public-sector employees in Costa Rica will be required to be vaccinated against Covid-19. Private employers can also obligate their employees to be vaccinated.


About 82% of all Costa Ricans ages 12 and older have received at least one Covid-19 vaccine dose, per the latest figures from the Social Security Fund (CCSS).

Where to get a Covid vaccine in Costa Rica

Vaccination locations and times are available on the CCSS website at http://www.ccss.sa.cr/vacunacion.

All citizens and residents who are adults (18+) or who are teenagers (12+) with risk factors are eligible for the vaccine. Documented migrants are also eligible. Undocumented migrants (e.g. perpetual tourists) can receive a vaccine until Thursday, October 14, at CCSS sites. Click here for a list of Covid-19 vaccination sites in Costa Rica.

The POLICY is not in doubt, only the METHOD that US Tourists will use to prove they are vaccinated. EU Tourists will already have a compatible method via the EU Digital Covid Certificate. Don't fool yourself, they full intend to require all people entering a public place to be vaccinated. The only places exempt will be Supermarkets and Pharmacies. Read the stories in CR Hoy or La Nacion. If you ain't vaccinated, you will be trying to pick up Chicas at Fresh Market.

You are correct Boyton a bad choice of wording on my part…I edited my post to basically say, the CR authorities aren’t sure yet what system will be used to verify U.S. tourists vaccination status. Hopefully it’s added to the health pass and easy to do. I’ll also have my card just in case.

Or simply just get vaccinated. A good friend of mine just died of Covid. Unvaccinated. So I had to say this. No offense intended.

One friend, and one person I knew through others, both died from blood clots 1 and 2 days after second dose. Another very good friend got his clot dissolved and lived (barely) 2 days after.
I’m not anti vax. I’m making my decision on my own research. And, I will not be forced to take it.

CR has implemented a different dosing schedule than used in the US. They are waiting 8 weeks between doses. There is solid scientific evidence that this produces a stronger antibody response.

However, if you haven’t already gotten your first dose you will not make it by December 1. I’m wondering how many chicas at our favorite establishments might get caught by this and be unable to enter and work right before Christmas.

I think yesterday’s announcement will soon be followed with a requirement to be vaccinated to enter the country. Why would you let a tourist enter the country if they will not be able to enter a hotel anywhere in the country? Better to stop them from boarding the plane by requiring vaccination to get the QR code.

Also, imagine the logistics behind getting QR Codes to 5 million residents across economic/educational strata and then setting up the mechanism to check them at all the venues required, add to that policing compliance. The country can't even stop the hundreds of clandestine parties each weekend in the barrios. Bear in mind that this is happening against the backdrop Costa Rican election, including presidential, to be held Sunday, February 6. The week before SuperBowl Sunday. All the elements if a Perfect Shitstorm.

Lesson for the tourist monger: Jet your jab, come on down, enjoy the show. None of this will reduce the availability of poon.

On a side note, I know of a number of locals who were not eligible for the vaccine here in CR because they were perpetual tourists. The CCSS has only just opened vaccination up to these folks. CR is serious about the requirement, the question is how smoothly will it be implemented. This is the time to 'go with the flow' rather than 'cop an attitude'.
