I always take a couple of hundred in cash and then just use ATMs to get cash in colonnes.I usually use the ATM in the DelRey lobby and have found it gives a fair exchange rate compared to other ATMs

I will repeat what Koppite said. No need for a large amount of cash. ATMs are available in numerous locations. One thing I would add before you leave make sure you have working pin numbers and find out what your card company charges for the use of the ATM. That could be as much as $12 each time you use it. I find the difference in exchange rate from one ATM machine to the next to be very small.

I take about $80, keep $60 in the room safe, and a $20 in the wallett. My first stop is the Colonial Casino and the ATM in the back, near the crap table and rest rooms.

The ATM there has always been a good place to get money at a competetive exchange rate.

My first trip in 2000, the rate was about 3/1 (33,000 colones=$100), but the rate is now around 2/1 (48,000 colones=$100). I have always used colones.

I usually bring $5-600 with me. A couple of hundreds, fiftys and the rest in twentys. The Colonial casino has good exchange rates. And if I need more money the ATM is close by.
I usually keep $ 75.00 aside for my return trip expenses.

I usually only carry $ 100.00 with me at a time/ or equal in colones
( the rest is in the room safe)

I pay for everything after the cab fare from the airport in colones.

I've been to CR twice, both times I taken about 1000 cash and just put it in the safe and take what I need. I've never had a problem. I use an ATM if needed but I like carry my cash, then I just worry about exchange rates.

Just be sure to take good care of your safe key.
