The article also says that only about 5% of the former volume of tourists is expected, based on the restrictions expected. And a number of other quotes are officials saying that initially it will be only visitors from areas where the virus is under control, or not out of control. And Europe, Canada were specifically mentioned, with US as an area where the virus was out of control. But, they could specify certain airports or states as being lower risk. Not sure how that would work for them...for example if flights from New York were allowed how would they monitor where the passengers were actually from? Anyway...waiting for actual announcement coming this week.

Maybe the article has been updated, but the first sentence says "tourists from the United States, Canada, and Europe".

QCostaRica HAD been doing a fair job of translating Spanish language news releases into English and posting them. However, it has started combining various releases and in the process skewing the news.

The President announced that the plan to open the airports on August 1 would proceed. (He did not say you could fly in from Miami on August 1.)

The Minister of Health said, the airports would receive visitors from places where the virus spread was under control. (He did not say you could fly in from Miami on August 1.)

The airport, SJO, released a video saying they were ready to receive visitors having installed thermometers, hand washing stations and sanitizing carpets. (They did not say you could fly in from Miami on August 1.)

The tourism board, CANATUR, projected that when tourists did return, revenues would only be 5% of preCOVID levels. (They did not say you could fly in from Miami on August 1.)

IMO, it is not that papers are intentionally misleading. Their job is to attract eyeballs in order to sell advertising. This pattern has existed since Ben Franklin and Poor Richard's Almanac. As things heat up here, the lack of unified government communication if just fueling things. The President, Ministries, and agencies don't field open questions from the public or press, so the press cut and paste from different statements to construct "answers" to questions the aren't able to ask.

So you're saying that they did not say you could fly in from Miami? What about IAH?

Just kidding. What you are saying makes sense. Their latest is that the Health Minister will announce tomorrow so then we will know for sure.

My hope is that they decide that their economy needs money from the United States but that's wishful thinking. Another wish is that they will quite treating residents like phucking TOURISTS. They have really shown what they think of residents through all this. We ain't Costa Rican so we can go Phuck ourselves.

Every resident or perpetual tourist stuck in country injects at least $1,000 a month of cold hard cash into the economy. Most probably spend more, assume an average of $2,000 per month. With 6 months (March - August) lockdown, that's $12,000 per resident or perpetual tourist. If 5,000 people would leave, that would represent a loss of $60,000,000 into the CR economy at a time when tourism for the last 6 months has contributed approximately $0.00. Talk about an RFM! Yes, we can leave, but if we do we can't come back for an undefined period of time.

Yes, these are hypothetical numbers. Does that make me a hypothetical hostage?

The latest news today on the reopening of international air travel is to wait until Thursday (tomorrow) for more specific detaials.

https://www.crhoy.com/nacionales/video- ... as-aereas/

Minister of Health, Daniel "The Hammer" Salas gave a press conference today and confirmed that the plan is to open on August 1st the SJO and LIR international airports.

On the 14th of July, Luis Munoz a subdirector for civil aviation had said that international air travel would be allowed for the United States, Canada, and Europe (although Europe is not allowing flights to Costa Rica).

https://www.crhoy.com/nacionales/se-man ... eview=true

However, the implicit message is that actual routes will be limitted.

So, the news is wait for more news, possiblely maƱana.

The announcement will be made at the daily press conference 1pm time here. I have a friend who has a flight from Newark to San Jose on Aug. 2 that as of today has not been canceled. Keep your fingers crossed.

European Union, United Kingdom, Canada. No USA.
5 flights per week

Post subject:  Re: coranavirus concern

Today's announcement was pure political theater. The EU is not allowing flights to CR, British Airways is not flying until Oct 27 and Air Canada until September 1.

The five flights per week they mentioned are likely the rescue flights that have been ongoing. Nothing has changed!

Pure politicians trying to look like they are doing something they are not!
