Post subject:  Do you carry your passport with you while traveling in CR?

I usually left it in hotel safes but read some reports a few years ago that CR Govt wants tourists to carry it for ID purposes. This is also becoming more common practice in many other countries in the world.
Last year I made the mistake of carrying it in my pocket while hiking and it got slightly wet in rain. I had to go through hell to get it replaced.
I would to seek some advise from seasoned world travelers as to what is the best way to do it?
Leave it in Hotel but carry a photocopy alongwit copy of entry stamp?
Carry some other form of ID such as driving licence?
Carry yet another type of govt ID?

I also have a second question - What do you guys use to upload any hot pics of amigas and encounters in CR? There is lot of scrutiny of electronic devices now a days at airports. Although I have nothing to fear but still who wants some asshole to look at your private life and question you. What is the best way to ensure access to your private pics yet keep them away from uniformed thugs?

If you are staying within a reasonable distance ie walking distance 2miles or so a copy with your entry stamp will do just fine. If you go out of town, Cartago, Heredia or further make sure to take it with you, put it in a zip lock if you are worried about it getting wet. If you are driving you will need your passport and drivers license with you in case you are asked.

In 50+ trips I have never been scrutinized about my laptop, camera, phone, etc. I also am not doing anything illegal and have nothing incriminating on my devices anyway. I was asked a couple of times what my travel entailed and I told them straight up having lots of sex with beautiful women. That would be met with a jealous and surprised look and I would be on my way.

As more USA passports are stolen in CR than any other country in the world. The embassy came to an agreement with CR that only a copy is necessary to have on your person. Along with a copy of the entry stamp.
Keep in mind that if you lose or have 2 passports stolen you get a restricted passport good for only a year.
It may be three but you get the idea.
Now if you are driving you should have your passport with you. If you are staying over night somewhere else in CR you should also bring your passport. But don't walk around with it.
You do need your passport when changing money at a bank or at a service master place like the counter at Walmart or Mas x Memos.

I leave the actual passport at the hotel.

I carry with me a copy of it though and my state drivers license.

If you are not driving I would leave my license in a safe spot and not carry it with you.

I would rather deal with local authorities than jump through hoops to obtain a replacement passport. I always carry a copy when visiting.

Believe it or not, I have used it as ID to get Liquor bottles; Walmart will ask for an ID once in a while.

And I figured if I lost that, it is a hell of lot easier to replace than a passport.....and no hassles getting back home.

It’s enough work to carry around my huge dick. I don’t have room for a passport

You can have more than one passport, y'know.

You can apply for a "limited" or "restricted" passport, in addition to your regular passport.

The second passport would be restricted to using in 1, 2, or 3 countries you travel to, alot.

Also, you can ask for a passport card. It basically has all your ID page info in a credit card sized card. Picture and everything.

Passport card is good for ID. So is a Global Entry card.

I bring two passports. I put one in the safe and hide the other one somewhere else.

Great info JTF, I had no idea you could have a second limited passport. Will look into it.

I've had a second passport for a while now. It's certainly possible to get one, but it's not guaranteed for anyone. The State Dept. approves them on a case-by-case basis.

It's not intended to be a "spare" passport. If you're applying for that reason, your application will most likely be denied. Come up with a better reason or make something up. The most common reason used is that the person travels often to places that require visas in advance, meaning that your passport spends a fair amount of time in the mail or otherwise not in your possession.

The good news is that it doesn't have to be restricted. The second passport that I have has no restrictions on it at all. It's just as valid as my primary passport. The only difference between the two is that the second passport has a valid period of only two years, so it needs to be renewed more often... and yes, when you renew it, you have to "re-justify" it.
