At the moment, is a proposed rule and to be voted on before enacting into law. The hassle of getting an ATM receipt showing a balance of $ 500 is another hassles. Additionally, if a group of tourists prefer to bring cash, the thieves along the highway have a built-in pre-qualified bus to hold up, lol

With the exit tax already in place, and this proposed $15 entry tax, PLUS the new VAT/sales tax on car rentals, and airline tickets starting on July 1 ; for both incoming and outgoing flights, you have to wonder what the thought process is . ????

Whack the tourists !!- " Give us your GREEN n GO"

Smart tour operators are already looking into other destinations to recommend to clients, where they can get more value for their money

As everyone knows CR is broke. The new president is doing everything he can to raise more revenue. He even brought in the IRS to help with collection techniques.
Many of the biggest most profitable companies in CR have not paid any taxes in years. Including the beer company that makes Imperial , Pilsen, Bavaria etc..
It costs 14$ to enter Nicaragua so the entry fee is nothing new in the world. If you can't afford 15$ to come to CR, stay home.
Now the thing about having 500$ to enter is idiotic. Panama has done this for a long time. Makes no sense really. How many broke people try to come into CR. Maybe it's a way to exclude Nicas from entering. Again though many other countries do this.
I was entering Canada once with my son for a two week vacation in my vehicle and the idiot border agent asked for proof I had money. I told him I worked at the refinery close by and showed him a debit card. Said I was going to the closest ATM across the border to get some Canadian pesos. He waved me through.

The CR government is now considering to require tourists & other visitors to buy a medical insurance policy from the caja to enter., in addition to a proposed $15 entry tax, and proof of $500 in the bank, plus the existing $ 36 exit tax , and new sales taxes starting July 1 adding 13% to car rental, foodstuff, all services, etc WTF ?

Like I wrote CR is broke and the new president is trying to raise revenue. The tax law goes into effect July 1st. The others are just proposed and may or may not go into effect. By the way every Latin country has a departure tax included in the ticket price.
Ecuador recently passed a law that visitors had to prove they have health insurance upon entry.
Seems a bit much to make every visitor buy insurance from the caja.
Some countries in South America like Argentina, Chile, Bolivia and Brazil require visitors from the USA to buy a 100$ visa in advance.
Times are certainly changing in international travel.

getting through customs and immigration can be a very time consuming event now ( depending upon when you land). If they start adding in additional layers such as a $15 entry fee, proof of having $500 and maybe insurance that will add time to each and every entry, this will quickly turn off many people and make them consider another destination. I could see a bank putting in an atm machines before getting in the country and charging you a extra fee for getting a receipt for your account balance. They could just add the entry fee into the ticket price like the exit tax but that won't be a time saver unless all airlines charge the fee, the customs / immigration agents would have to check your ticket or a boarding pass to confirm that you have paid the fee.

They have stated that the money was going to national parks, non residents already pay more than locals to visit these places.

Nicas, Cubans, and every other immigrant looking to pass through, or stay and live off Costa Rican welfare benefits. Had a Tica tell me that their illegals are entitled to every social welfare benefit the locals are, and it is bleeding the taxpayers dry.

With how expensive Costa Rica has gotten along with all the hassles there, I'm starting to think it's not worth it to go there anymore. I'm definitely going to places where I'm going to get more bang for my buck. If this legislation passes, it's just one more hassle and expense that will make Costa Rica not worth it.

Some Canadians call their currency pesos because of its weakness against the USA dollar.

Actually, visitors are entitled to health care that many Costa Rica citizens are not. That irritates many Costa Ricans...especially that Nicas can get health care and a large percentage of Ticos do not have coverage (most Tica working girls have no coverage, for example). So...this new proposal would partially change that...which makes a bit of sense.

I also heard from Ticas that the Government is giving Benefits to the foreigners quicker than nationals.....don't know if that is true or just bad blood.

I had a girl tell me the same i.e. the Nicas get benefits they dont. thought CR might be taking lessons from us dopes here in the US of A!!!!

Also some of the hassles the CR govt sound like some of the new things enacted or going to be enacted by the corrupt and inept Thai govt..

Dont know how difficult it is to get a "retirement" or long term visa to stay in CR but its changing for Thailand and not for the better.......
