Post subject:  R.I.P. Bilko

This is a double posting, also appearing in the V.I.P. section. I hope the Admins won't have a problem with this.

Dan "bilko" Evans was one of the first members of CRT.
Dan Evans lived in Costa Rica for many years. He and his buddy/roomie known as "Loco Mike" had a little duo, "Gringo Starr" that frequently performed at the New York Bar during its heyday.

A native of Santa Cruz, California Daniel grew up during the height of the hippie era, and his personal politics reflected that background. He once described himself as being farther left than Lenin himself... and his personal and political philosophy led him to try and be "Captain Save-a-Ho" during his tenure in Costa Rica. Sadly as so often happens, the beneficiaries of his generosity became as parasites, demanding rather than asking help, and giving him literally nothing in return. This fact contributed to Dan's lifelong battle with depression, a battle which in the end, he lost. Even a fresh start in Medellin could not lift the pall of his depression.

Three days ago, Dan "Bilko" Evans jumped from his sixteenth story apartment in Medellin. I am unsure of his age, late sixties to be sure. God grant him peaceful rest. Perhaps he'll find in death what he sought in life...who knows? I will mis Daniel Evans, a fellow musician, a friend and a mentor who introduced me to a number of wonderful ladies, and with whom I had many enjoyable and memorable moments. Goodbye, my friend. Descanse en paz.

That is sad news. I never net him but he wrote at least 4 ebooks about the ho's in CR.
Dances with Prostitutes
Clueless Clyde in Costa Rica
Clyde heads south
More dances with prostitutes.
All by "Thomas Ray O'Brian" available on Amazon.
He had a promotion on CRT giving his books free for one day to members about 5 years ago.
He left CR for Colombia and I do not know if he wrote any books there. I will check Amazon today to see if he did.
Never knew anything about his personal life.
RIP.

As far as I know I never met Dan, but may have back in the day, never ask people what their handle on CRT is when I do. But I did reach out to him on this forum and he was helped me get my first book published. So sorry to hear that he suffered from depression and that he is no longer with us.

RIP Dan. We had differences politically and in age. I knew he did not treat himself well. But, I never knew why. This is sad because depression is treatable. I have had my bouts and the meds do help. You can get antidepressants in Latin America very easily. You don't even need a script. I won't off meds when I lived in CR years ago. I thought the bug juice and chicas were the solution. NOT!!!! RIP Ole Buddy

Sorry to hear that. I saw Dan and Mike (Gringo Starrs) perform at the New York Bar many times. Also, I met Dan a few times at Joe B's bar. RIP.

Recently I had dinner with a few veteran CRT'ers and we all were sad to learn of Bilko's passing. We had all spent time at NY Bar and all had come to know him as the nice, gentle and humble man that he was. I never met up with him in Medellin, but my times with him in Costa Rica, now over 10 years ago, remain pleasant memories.

Ciaociao
