Ok so I have to admit. I'm not a newbie. I know San Jose fairly well. I have never made it to monicas. Can someone tell me simple directions from hdr, SL, la, that anyone can follow. I have. A map that says Calle 4 between 8 and 10 avenue. Horse shit locations, because you cannot find a Calle 4 from the gulch easily. They are all odd numbers Calle in the direction that it is in.

they are odd numbers until you pass calle central then they are even numbers. why not just get a $2 or $3 cab ride there and when you return just look for landmarks that you will recognize for future visits. many of the streets are poorly marked

I hope you can find Av. Central, the walking street. From any of those places you listed, turn right on Av. Central and go to Calle 4. On the corner, on the right, are the flower vendors and behind them is the large McDonalds. Turn left and walk four and a half blocks. Monicas is on the left and there is a sign. You will be walking in an area that looks a little shady, but everything is good. Ring the door bell, and the door will be unlocked.

Once you get to Walking street (Ave. Central) turn right and you will finally come to calle central, the next calle is 2 then you come to calle 4 (no sign on this corner). The flower shop and McDonalds are on the right and at the corner of calle 4 is a big Bonk of Costa Rica (BCR)..
Turn left here and cross Ave2, Ave.4, Ave6 then the next is Ave. 8 , cross it and on you left as you keep walking you will see a sign saying Monicas. Ring the bell to be let in. If you reach Ave. 10 retrace your steps.

They have several worthwhile entertainers at Monica's. Robert is doing a great job IMHO.

The odd-even system actually makes it easy to get around downtown..as long as you can find the street numbers. Calles starting at Calle Central ("0") are even numbers going west, odd numbers going east. Avenidas from Avenida Central are even numbers going south, odd numbers going north. When you're on the normal grid of streets that works fine. When they turn on various angles...well, that's a great way to get lost.

I didn't know that was the set up for streets and avenues until I spent a long time looking for an even numbered street when I was on the other side of Central. I was looking for 8 and could never find it between 7 and 9. Finally got frustrated enough to stop in place that had maps of San Jose and got it figured out.
