The last couple times I have been (April and Oct) the Kolbi ICE kiosk in baggage claim was boarded up. Searching the forums some of you are talking about it being there in June and July. Did it move and I am just not seeing it? The place I used to see it that was boarded up on my last couple trips was in baggage claim between the money exchange and the duty free liquor store near the exit. Also, whether there is still one there at the airport or not can someone tell me where one is in town? Walking distance from all our regular stops. Thanks! |

Strangely, the Kolbi kiosk at SJO seems now to be on the departure level, after you pass through security. In the gulch, the biggest Kolby store in THE COUNRTY, is on Calle 3, about 1/2 block south of the National Theater. |

Thank you very much. I'll check it out. The Sim I bought a couple years ago is finally prompting me to recharge. I use the phone with Wifi in the states so I can WhatsApp from the Costa Rican phone number even though I don't get a cellular signal. I tried recharging it online at Recharge.com to hopefully keep the number and they of course took my money, but now they want to SMS or call me with a code to confirm...which I cant receive in the states. If anyone knows a trick for this I would appreciate it. I hate to lose the number, but I think I am probably SOL. I'm just going to take it in when I am there in March and see what they can do for me. |

If you have any amigos or amigas now on the ground in CR, they can put 500 colones on your number at any convenient store, like a Mus Mani, AM/PM, Mas x Menos, the bakery, etc. A 500 clone recharge will "save" your number for the next 120 days. All they need is your CR number to recharge your sim. If you don't have any amigos now on the ground, send a PM to me. |

Did you try them? |

No, I havent tried much of anything. I have one sim card I bought at the airport 3 years ago and have just been recharging it every time I land. With the Kolbi Kiosk in baggage claim closed I have just been using Wifi while in town and it has been over a year since I have been able to refresh the cellular service. After looking at it more closely last night I think it is Whatsapp that is causing me problems. I was confused because the page pops up as soon as I open the phone and wants me to confirm my phone number with a 6 digit PIN. I may still have a problem with my SIM when I get to Costa Rica, but the problem I am having at the moment is that I cant use Whatsapp on Wifi because I cant receive the SMS or phone call confirmation code to verify my phone number with Whatsapp while I am in the states. I am not sure what happened to suddenly trigger the problem, but I think I am going to have to wait until March while I am in town to know for sure |

My understanding is the following with ALL of the cell companies in CR...... If you haven't recharged your sim in the last 90 days, then your sim will not work with the cell towers in CR until you recharge it with some amount of money - - 500 colones or more. Using your phone on a WIFI system someplace in the world to operate WhatsApp is NOT using the cell towers where you are except to send and receive DATA - - - much like using your laptop to get on the internet. If you haven't recharged your sim in the last 120 days, with some amount of money, 500 colones or more, then your sim is disabled FOREVER - - - and you can't retrieve your number for any amount of money. After no recharge for 120 days, your number is gone forever. But I have heard of some guys claiming that the cell company will waive the 90 day and 120 day rules under certain circumstances. Buenas suerte. |

My sim card had expired and I went to the Kolbi office in the BCR building on Central Avenue and the lady put in a new sim and changed the number to my original number.
