I called the ATT folks, but of course, I"m getting a different answer each time. So...I'm sure someone here probably knows... 1. When using a iPhone on this ATT Passport plan, and I'm calling within CR to another CR number, how do I do that? 2. When ...............and I'm calling from CR back to the USA, how do I do that? Thanks for your help! |

As of 28 August 2016, AT&T no longer has a roaming agreement with I.C.E, / Kolbi. Kolbi is the only carrier that covers all of Costa Rica. It is the only mobile carrier at our Lodge. AT&T was selling international plans after 28 August to people travelling to Costa Rica and not informing them, AT&T may still have agreements with Claro. Unlocked inexpensive GSM phone and CR SIM is the way to go. |

To dial a CR number from a roaming US phone, you dial it internationally. International access - 011 - country code - 506 - then the eight digit number. |

I have an iPhone on an AT&T plan. When I am in CR I rely on Facetime and Whatsapp to make calls. It works great, including calling Europe and the states |

I guess I need to check with ATT again as I signed up for a passport plan that gave me a certain number of gigs to use data and also fairly reasonable phone calls. Don't think I wanna mess around with the sim card thing, etc... |

Again, I had a plethora of angry AT&T customers at the Lodge in September & October who were furious that they'd bought AT&T Passport Plans specifically for Costa Rica only to find - after spending hours on my CR phone - that they had no service in Costa Rica. No one believed me. They told me "I specifically asked and was told... yada, yada." CHANGED - Apparently AT&T has roaming agreements with Claro and Movistar. |

According to this page, AT&T is using Claro and Movistar as roaming partners. Coverage is not nationwide. And the statement about Calro is confusing - "The coverage is just in the San Jose Metropolitan area"? And apparently you can only call Costa Rica and the US - "You may not be able to place calls to international destinations other than the United States while roaming in this destination. Calls can be completed within the visited destination and back to the United States." Looking at the prices, I'm still failing to see why getting an inexpensive unlocked GSM phone and a Kolbi SIM isn't a better option. My Project Fi plan works everywhere the AT&T plan works - at no additional cost for data and SMS and 1/5th of the voice cost, but it doesn't work everywhere in Costa Rica - plus it lets me keep my US phone sanitized. |

However maybe there's some motivation to stick with the US number for stay in touch reachability/purposes? Slightly OT, but my intent once off contract is to port my mobile # to google voice. As I understand it you can have it forward to any other # pretty cheap if international. And call out using data and the google hangout app. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G900A using Tapatalk |

Since I'm signed into my Google /Gmail account, all my US phone voicemails and SMS / MMS texts show up on my CR phone. I haven't tried Google Voice to see if it integrates my Project Fi number. Just did and apparently it does! |
