Hi guys,
I finally booked and will be making a trip to Costa Rica in two weeks. There were several trip report here saying it was cheaper and more convenient to used than taxi. I like to take advantage of that. I just signed up for an uber account. I remembered reading here somewhere that uber isn't allow at the airport. I have never used uber before so, what would I need to do to have a uber driver pick me up and drop me off at SL?

Don't know about picking you up, I've started using Pura Vida Transport & love the security, especially at night. I did however, have an uber driver pick me up & bring me to SJO for my return flight & there were no problems whatsoever. There are no signs on the vehicle so no one other than you 2 will know its UBER. What I did was used them a couple of times for rides around town then set up a place and time for the same driver to pick me up for the ride to the airport. That way there was not a lot of waiting around on the street with my carry on luggage! Cost was $13 or less, can't remember exactly but I do remember it was less than 1/2 the $30 going rate of the red cabs.

I would suggest using Steve, especially if you are coming in after dark for your ride from the airport & setting up an UBER ride back.

Two weeks ago, I got a red taxi from the upper (departure) level of the airport into the gulch for 8 Mil without the meter (less than $16).

The first red taxi that approached me at the curb with my 4 big bags said "yes" to 8 Mil. I've heard that the Uber cost is about the same.

I had a driver called from the Sportsman Lodge to pick me up and take me to the airport. When we arrived at the airport he said look at the meter which said 23,500. I gave him 25,500 hoping for 2k change but he drove off as soon as he got the money in his hand. So I paid $51 US for the ride from SL to the airport. So yeah I would recommend uber

that's the same amount I offer them. If they say no, turn & start walking away, 90% chance they'll change their mind & take your offer.

Hello Hank,

Can I ask you if this was a driver recommended by Sportsmens Lodge to you that charged you this amount?
I would help me to know this. Or was it maybe a Red Taxi with a bad or juiced up meter?

Thanks,
Bill

Thanks for the replies guys. I will probably use Pura Vida Transport when I go to Jaco. I got a party of 6 so $150 isn't bad. But for everything else I'll try to use uber.

That's one of the reasons why I wouldn't use a normal taxi.

the night before I had asked for a taxi at 6am. The security guy called him. Now I liked the security guy, he was very helpful and friendly. I would hate for him to get in any trouble. The night before I had given an open bottle of rum to a chica cause I couldn't bring it back. The security guy caught it and I went to the front door and told him it was okay. She was pissed but I thanked security for checking because it could have been something important. So your security is great and helpful and fun to joke around with. I am just pointing out the taxi drivers overcharge.

Don't post much but this Uber story is worth it. Last Tuesday Oct. 18th I used Uber, driver Jose, from SJO to my house in Curriabat, cost 9850 ( 19 bucks +-) normally 30-35 dollars. Saved a little. Now for the rest of the story. Driver pulls into my driveway and parks just outside my carport, we unload the luggage . On a table inside the carport is a Bosh drill driver and a battery powered screw driver. The next day I go to look for the items could not find them. I look on OLX and there they are, for sale by a guy named Jose. Go figure.

Hey bud, it happened to me once. You got ripped by a bandito with a rigged meter. Don't blame all cab drivers for the thievery of a few.

But yes, so long as Uber is legal there, it is a viable option.

One of the many reasons I like staying at La Amistad. Stay 4 nites or more, free ride to SJO in a nice van by a trusted driver!

They can pick up and drop off, but can't sit and wait at the airport like a normal taxi. For example, an UBER driver can drop you off, but after dropping you off they can't stay at the airport and wait for the next UBER ride. They must leave the airport.
