I keep seeing news articles here about the ongoing volcanic eruption. They mention ash and odors in San Jose. How bad is it there right now? I am coming down on the 16th and am beginning to wonder about the possible impact to the trip. The eruption seems to be getting worse as time goes on. Of course it could just stop at any time. This seems to happen every few years and I have never had a visit impacted over the ten plus years of visiting Costa Rica. |

At the moment it is not effecting anything. Flights are landing and departing on schedule. I have a white car that really shows it when there is ash in the air and I am not noticing any dust. Everything is back pretty much to normal. |

That's kind of what I thought the case might be. You know how the news blows everything up into a major crisis. Bring on the chicas. |

I live to the east of SJ directly in the path of most of the eruptions from Turrialba and am constantly sweeping up ash from the patio. Some also gets inside due to the ventilated nature of the houses here. Still, not much of a problem most of the time. Just a nuisance. After a major spewing there is more ash than usual and that can be be more of a problem. Especially if they close the airport. The amount of ash making it to SJ is even less. I get a kick out of the TV news after a big eruption and airport closure due to a dusting of ash. They always show a video of Air Force One landng at SJO after a huge eruption of Irazu. Must be more than a foot of ash on the runway. The plane is almost buried in it! Were people less wimpy back then? No airport closure/diversions! |

If the engines on Air Force One get burned up from the ash, they simply install new engines. That's easy to do when the the plane owner has a printing press to print more money. |
