On my last trip I obtained colones at the Bank of Costa Rica at the airport. I went to the grocery store in Jaco and they took all the bills except a five mil note, which they refused and said it was not real money. It looks very real to me. It is "serie C", dated 14 de setiembre, and says "Banco Central de Costa Rica. On one side there is a picture of a Mayan god like figure. What is this bill? Is it valid currency? |

You have an old bill which is no longer good anywhere. I think BCR will still exchange them... |

There was a timeframe to change the old bills, and the bank is not obligated to accept old bills anymore. They *may*, but they can refuse. The grandmother of a favorita once gave to my daughter one of the old bills to keep. She wanted to see 'what it was worth', and the bank teller explained that it was out of print and not exchangeable. Luckily, you can always try multiple banks, or try using your local bank at home, who may exchange it at face value. |

You didn't get an old bill, you got a counterfeit. It happens, even at a bank I guess. I don't think any bank would issue notes that were expired. But there is no BCR at the airport. The bank upstairs is Bank of San Jose. But it's funny that the bank missed it and a store clerk caught it. |
