Wondering if this is possible? The banks up North are 460 to 1. Looking to change a few hundred to get going the first night.

Change your money at the Airport bank (when it's open) . . . . or, in town, at the Colonial Casino (24 hours) right next to the HDR.

And the REAL exchange rate is 535-527 today (different banks, different rates) so that place (and the money change place downstairs at SJO) are making almost 20% pure profit just for exchanging money. Wonder how you get that concession... Another way to look at it is you will lose almost 20% of your money changing it there.

I arrive after the bank at the airport in San Jose closes. I figured the Colonial would be the best bet, but with frequent flights between Miami and SJO I thought the Miami airport might have something. Thanks for the confirmations.

Exchanging currency at almost any airport, you get hosed. This is especially true in the US for LA currencies.

When you arrive take colones out of the ATM, exchange at Colonial Casino, or exchange at your hotel or Del Rey as a last resort, you'll lose 3-5%, but not 15-20%.
