What research? I realize based on the number and tone of your post you think you know everything about everything. With respect to many of the commercials you see on TV the networks and local TV or radio stations donate the time as a public service so the donations are not going for that purpose. In addition in order to be tax exempt charities have to meet certain criteria with respect to amount of money raised actually going for a charitable purpose.
Like anything else there are good legitimate charities and there are lousy ones. If you are going to donate money and your not sure if the charity is legit take 5 minutes and do some research. There are a number of websites that evaluate charities and other non profits that will let you know if they are good or bad.
Research is not the correct word. I should have said statistics. It is widely known that most money ends up in the places other than with the people they are trying to help. Then again, jet fuel is not cheap..
As for knowing everything, it depends.

But in this case, I know what I'm talking about. I work in financial services, and currently being one of the directors (non-paid) for a 501(c)3 charity based in Latin America, I'm very familiar with the IRS rules and policies to get tax-exempt status. There are some many expenses, write offs, "administrative" costs, it's a phucking joke. But I'm glad that you have so much confidence in the big beaurocratic IRS and their oversite.
