Post subject:  DUI Conviction and entering CR?

I should have checked on this awhile ago, but about a year and a half ago I had a little too much to drink at a party and was convicted of a DUI in the US. Would this pose any problem for entering CR? I'm scheduled to fly in Friday but didn't get paranoid until now. ;) I know CR isn't Canada so I'm hoping I'm ok. Thx for the answers.

Not at all, if you have a valid US passport.

This was in the news here about two years, and supposedly Costa Rica immigration now has access to the online database that US Homeland Security provides so that law enforcement in other countries can look up criminal convictions in the US. This is the system that Canada uses to routinely exclude people with DUI convictions from entering their country.

However, as far as the public knows the system isn't currently being used for routine entries into the country. If it were then we would have heard some complaints by now. So, I think you are safe.

Thanks for the info. Sure hope there's no problem. Like you say, there certainly should be complaints/news if folks such as myself were not being allowed in the country. Anyway, I'm coming. ;) Be there Friday morning!!

You shouldn't have a problem entering CR, but if you are currently on probation, you may encounter problems when you re-enter the U.S.

Was wondering if you had any issues coming back to the US?

None coming or going. Why would I have issues coming back?? I'm certainly not restricted from any sort of travel by the US.

Thank you Redfield10 a buddy of mine also got pinched last year for a DUI in
Illinois but it was his second one and he is under conditional discharge and isn't supposed to leave the state but wasn't sure if immigration would give him a hard time on his way back to the US? I suggested for him to wait until his legal matters are settled b4 he travels.

He got two DUIs and the terms of his probation include not leaving the state and he's thinking about CR? Not very smart!!

Hello Redfield10,
Don't think too much you have valid U.S. passport.
And they don't pose any problem for entering CR!!

I'm confused here. Why would he encounter any problems coming back if they just let him leave the US? That doesn't make any sense!!

Still not making sense. If he can't travel due to probation, then they wouldn't have let him leave!

Gringo Tim , can you explain, please??

Well, it's kinda like crossing the US border into Mexico. You can drive right into Mexico with no one checking you but when you attempt to re enter the US you encounter a long line lol understand??
