A 200 GIG HARD DRIVE: You could probably spend your entire adult life trying to fill it up with music... |

It actually depends on how you want to store them. If you use a compression algorithm/method such as MP3 or WMA, you can fit a lot more than an uncompressed format such as WAV. The average person can't really tell the difference in sound quality between a compressed and an uncompressed song, but a true audiophile will be able to detect and discern subtle differences in the sound quality. As I prefer to get the best sound quality possible at all times, I prefer storing them uncompressed, which will retain ALL bits that are on the CDs that I copy/download from. Having said that, the previous points are moot if your computer does not have a good sound card, speakers, etc. I prefer to listen thru a good set of headphones. To get back to the original question, you should be able to store anywhere from 60,000 to 100,000 compressed songs (depending on the song lengths) on a 200 GIG hard drive. |

As an addendum to my previous response, an uncompressed audio (WAV) file uses 10 MB of storage per 1 minute of audio. Assuming the average song is 4 minutes in length, it takes 40 MB to store one song. This means that you can store 5,000 uncompressed songs on a 200 GIG hard drive. Compare that to the approximate 80,000 songs you can store in a compressed (MP3, WMA, etc.) format on the same hard drive. But, as I stated earlier, if you want to hear ALL the bits on the original CD (as I prefer), and you have plenty of space, then use the uncompressed (WAV) format. |
