This site has been a great source of info on the Gulch And select night time activities.

It seems from the board that the bars mentioned are just to go in, grab a girl and leave. An hour or so later, you are on your own again. That leaves a whole lot of down time. What do you do the rest of the time? Hang out at a pub a talk to old gringos? I can do that in the States. lol. Where the cool non-pro Ticas hang out?

Try San Pedro mall on the weekend. Got a 19 y.o. out of there one time.

It depends on what time you want to meet them. The big question is do you speak Spanish. If you do then some of my favorite places were the Malls, San Pedro is the closest, Las Flores in Heredia, Tres Rios on the way to Cartago. I hate to say it but walmart in the produce section is good because you can ask the single ladies what is this Fruit or Vegetable, and then if they are smiling when talking to you, ask how do you prepare it or what does it taste like. Maybe even ask if they would show you how to make something with it. You just need to not be afraid to ask them and try and not hesitate just go for it, but make sure to scope out if they have a ring on, or are with a boyfriend or husband. Parque Diversiones is a good place also but that is a family place so you will need to be tactful and expect it to be a place to set up a date for later and I would not tell them you are staying in the gulch area. I used to get a room at the Shitty Royal Dutch casino as I was not a place normal mongers would go. To get a girl in you go up the stairs to the Disco so no one gives you any shit, then continue up to the elevator on the third floor so there are no hassles. Also the non working girls are not intimidated by having to give up their cedula to the front desk but you also do not have the security of knowing who they are either. You used to be able to get a room there for about 20.00 a night but not anymore it is over 50 and in my eyes not worth it.

Last but not least are the tico bars but you have to speak Spanish for those or you will not fit in, other than sitting at the bar and drinking. If you can dance Salsa, Merengue, Bachata or Cumbia you will be golden and after you dance with one lady, you will be fighting them off with a stick.

Thanks for the info. I learned just the basic salsa step when living in Miami..so I suck. It is better than most white boys, at least. Also, I only know a small bit of Spanish--what I call "survival Spanish". I can get by, but Im by no means fluent in the language. If there are any Cubans on the board, I can tell you a funny story about my first time buying papaya at Publix in Miami. :) hahaha

Guess I'm stuck with the white whale tourists.

Are the any spots with live music.? Samba and bossa nova are my fav Latin music, but I have varied tastes. Just looking for where people are having fun and young girls enjoy talking to strangers. Haha. :)

The Jazz Café would be where I would point you towards for live music. Depending on the night is what type of music you get. You will find a good mix of people there. The one is San Pedro is the one you want

Key Largo is maybe the place you want to hang out. It across the street from Del Rey, but it has live music and dancing. All the girls there are working girls, but some won't mind having a little fun out dancing before going back to your room.

Agreed! It is still a working place for all the chicas, but much more relaxed than the HDR...and lends itself for a more social and fun atmosphere than just the quick interview and up to the room routine.

Through the years, and I'm talking decades (since way before HDR was opened) I've had my best pulls out of this dear place! Hopefully it will keep on going strong, though sometimes it doesn't seem like it.

Lately, the Key Largo has been so slow that it's hard to see how they can pay the light bill.

Thanks for all the advice. Heading to the airport soon. Wheels up in 3 hours. See you boys this afternoon. Where's the best happy hour party to start the night off?

I believe he is looking for non-working girls. If so, skip the KL. Weekends the parks are full, (but pay attention to who you are chatting up. Don't get yourself into major trouble.) and I have been able to barge into group conversation without any issues, though their colloquial spanish is too much for me right now.

I met several at the Escazu Mall (oeste). At the food court used to meet a bunch of TEFL teachers to give free language lessons. I was practicing for CELTA and joined right in. Made many friends and contacts. But they are not working girls, so don't make a fool of yourself in public.

Bro,

Depending on your age. There are all kinds of spots literally walking distance from the gulch. Barrio California has a whole street of bars. In Barrio Escalante there are some brew pubs and spots to hang out. All over Avenida Central there are spots you can stop in and just chill out. If you wanna be around college chicks you can hit Calle Armargura, which is by UCR. In Escazu there is a place called Fandangos if you like to dance to latino music.

Your problem is that this board is indeed used for what it is intended. So a lot of info you get will be pointed. I just mentioned various areas within a 2k colones ride from the gulch(with the exception to Escazu) that there are lots of people. Just kind of depends on your age or at least your mental age. 8)
