Just heard a report that Volcano Turialba is in the process of erupting. I can verify that it is hazy outside and a covering of dust is settling on everything. Turialba erupted a couple times last year. It is located Southeast of San Jose near Cartago.

The airport did re-open today and should remain open unless Turrialba decides to blow more ash out. Today (Friday), there are a ton of delays. The Delta from LAX is about 5 hours late and the noon arrivals are showing about 2-3 hours late today. I figure things should be back to normal tomorrow (Saturday).

Volcan turriabla is actually northeast of san jose. That why coronado and moravia are most affected. Lots of ash on cars here in downtown san jose and ash inside also. The ash is getting blown around and is irritating to the eyes.

Tico Times reporting more than 7,000 travelers had problems yesterday and this morning thanks to the eruption. The airport is currently open as the three eruptions today (Friday) weren't large enough to get ash that far. I've seen speculation they 'think' there won't be more big eruptions but they can't really know. They are in the process of getting samples tested to see the composition that should give them more clues about how much lava is pushing towards the surface. It was just a few days ago they reported the first signs of lava in the crater then this happens.

was at Irazu yesterday (Sunday) morning. Major cloud front below the caldera completely blocked the NE view ... found out later it was Turra belching again.

Will post photos later.

Oh, and Thursday in SJO was major windy and had bad issues with ash in the eyes. Didn't know about Turra til the evening. BB57's shirt looked despeckled ... like it was sown with silver thread.

Hey don't you know, I am secretly so rich that all my cloths are tailor made and interwoven with threads of pure silver!!

Seriously, I do not know what the composition of the ash from Turrialba is, but I do know that it affected my eyes much more than when St. Helens blew its top. And where I was (close to Olympia, Washington) we had over 3 inches of ash back then. But then I was about 35 and I am more than double that today, so maybe I am just more sensitive to the ash now!!

The ash doesn't seem to be much of a problem now. The first couple of days it made a mess of my car but things seem to be back to normal now. There is still plenty of it on other surfaces so it is easy to get your hands or clothes dirty. Until there is a good rain it is something that is to be expected.

No new large eruptions since late Friday night so ash has really dissipated. However, OVSICORI (CR volcano agency) posted on Facebook that they do expect more eruptions in the near future thanks to the results of tests on the latest ash expulsions. The last eruption included lava which they think portends more and possibly larger eruptions. But then again, like all volcanology, they can give generalizations but they can't really say for sure what will happen. For anyone here or coming soon, keep an eye on the Tico Times or AM Costa Rica.
