Cruz Roja is reporting 4 dead and 5 persons missing in wreck of the Pura Vida Princess in the Pacific Ocean this morning. The boat was traveling to Tortuga Island when it hit rough seas and sank. 30 boats participating in rescue operations have brought 54 survivors to the Los Sueños Marina. WTF? Rough seas cause a boat to sink? Did they know the conditions were bad before going out? I doubt they got that bad all of a sudden. Third world boat, with third world maintenance, and with third world oversight leads to this shit. Honestly, I'm surprised that it doesn't happen more often. |

Maybe overloaded, maybe poor judgement, or maybe just a bad squall that popped up. It's the ocean, bad storms come from nowhere very quickly, even if you have good radar onboard. Much bigger ships than this go down all the time with experienced captains and crews. Hope the survivor tally rises. God bless them all. |

This catamaran that sunk actually left from Los Suenos and only made it a few miles up the coast before it went down so no where near the protected waters of the Gulf of Nicoya. You are correct in thinking many of these cruises leave from Puntarenas which would have protected it a bit better for a longer part of the cruise. Winds are always extreme this time of year in Costa Rica. It sounds like the winds pushed the catamaran onto its' side and the large waves swamped it rather quickly. |

A few years ago, one of the famous Philly Duck boats slammed into a barge on the Delaware killing two passengers. So, poor judgment is not only limited to "third world" crews. I did the Tortuga cruise over 10 years ago and thought the crew ran a pretty tight operation. |
