Most everyone has adroitly handled this issue with excellent and poignant advice so no need for me to repeat, and I wish I could deliver an experienced old pro admonishment, but as an 11 year veteran I can unembarrassingly  admit I have fallen for many of these tricks, (mostly in my first couple years but not always). Even worse, sometimes I KNEW when one was trying to trick me and STILL I kept trying to negotiate with her., that made her more exciting of a challenge in a George from Seinfeld kind of way to me!  
To add insult to injury, I would sometimes then try to negotiate with her without confronting her and letting her know I knew she was lying..I thought I could outwit and outmaneuver these 20 something third world uneducated females with what I perceived to be my highly skilled honed over decades business negotiation acumen... 
Most of the time I got burned, and sometimes worse, sometimes perversely happy I got the little I got.....   
The best one that got me was this mind boggling 18 year old who used to work at the ancient New York Bar. She was a bartender, not a working girl. She was angelic, ethereal, radiant, perfect and always talked to me when I came in and spent time with me away from other patrons, she even asked me to give her a massage at the bar once.
I was hooked, and one night one of my buddies was there and called me, he said she is asking him to call me so she can ask me on a date and could I get there when she gets off work? I was there in 1/2 an hour and after our normal flirting, as she was getting off work and I was excited about a real date, she tells me her aunt has to chaperon the first date, a Costa Rica ''custom" for young girls.
It was a good first punch and I should have known better right then and there but my dream of her was too overwhelming and besides, I knew her aunt, she worked at the new York Bar too, and I always talked and joked with her as well, so.....somehow I at that moment realize this is not going to end well but I keep going, my brain and whatever is left of my rational intellect is clouded like the fools who perish climbing Mt. Everest... 
Most of you old timers already know what happened without me even having to tell it, we ended up at an expensive restaurant, they both ordered expensive dinners, I scored a kiss on the cheek from each one and away they went. 
The story doesn't end there. When I do stupid, I don't treat it lightly. I continued to talk with her and continued to try to get her to go on a date with me alone. She kept refusing, saying that is the Tica custom.
One day she had a job interview in the Sabana business office area that she knew I worked in. She said she could meet me at a restaurant (expensive one, of course) close to my company around the time I get off work. Ahh, like the moth waiting patiently to get burned by the lightbulb when it's turned on, I jumped. 
Well we had a great conversation, great dinner, for 18 she was highly intelligent, spoke decent English and surprisingly quite sophisticated for her youth. I asked her to come to my nearby lair, hinting if she was interviewing for a better job because she needed more money all she had to do was ask, I can help her out. (Remember she is not a working girl but I'm thinking it's needed to close the deal).
She laughs at me and says "$200"! I normally would refuse to pay that in Costa Rica, even to a top 10 who agrees with everything I want. I've paid $100, even $120 to one of my favorites but that was for a guaranteed mind boggling 3 hours. That would be my max.
Not this time. I was infatuated with this one, we "clicked" we communicated with each other, we "knew" each other intimately I convinced myself, I was almost now obsessed with her, oh what the hell, I WAS infatuated with her and blurted out "OK"!!! I, at that moment was stark raving mad, $200 was irrelevant, I HAD to have this one!!!
She looked at me in shock and said "You crazy" and asked me to sit with her and wait with her to catch her bus. In my final moment of dimwitted Don Quixote gallantry, I hailed a cab and handed her $10, I asked once again before helping her into the cab; "Are you sure you have to go? We can get together another time if now's not good. What are the chances we can get together another time??? 
She just laughed, said "you crazy" and shut the door. I found out later she had done similar things with different American suckers like me, even taking one clown downtown and having him buy her tons of clothes, I actually met him later and he confessed he got no poon from her either....
I also found out the aunt told her about me and told her I was infatuated with her and could be another easy dinner...auntie would also be compensated if the chump spent additional dollars beyond the initial sucker dinner intro...
I invite any fellow member who has similar or funnier confessions of being stung to tell us the particulars, I suspect many are quite amusing...
And Fiedler, I'd like to armchair quarterback how you should have dealt with this situation...but those that are not without sin cannot cast the first stone.....  
At least you didn't pay UPFRONT and when BS was starting to be thrown you didn't pay at all, sounds like in the end you handled it well.... 
Seems like this particular chica was just a bad egg who attempts to pull sh*t if she thinks her victim is drunk,

) When things start getting too hard with a girl, it's time to move on. Personally, I would have parted ways at the request for taxi money. As an ex-pat, you have access to chica circles, outside the normal gulch venues, that the gringo visitors do not.
