That is a question I am keeping an eye on. Whatever day they return, you can bet the road to the airport will be closed and it will be a larger version of President Obama arriving. |

It is confirmed, the Costa Rican soccer team arrives around noon on Tuesday. Anyone coming in around that time or after, plan on a long wait at the airport or a very roundabout trip into town. The main highway from the airport to town is going to be closed and a large celebration held near Park Sabana. Good luck! From the Tico Times: (http://www.ticotimes.net/2014/07/07/ten ... ele-return) Preparations for the festivities already have begun, with the road in front of the statue closing Monday night. Access from the airport on General Cañas Highway will be restricted starting at 8:30 a.m to plan for La Sele’s motorcade. At 10 a.m., authorities will close Calle 42 and Paseo Colón — beginning at the National Ch*ldren’s Hospital and continuing to La Sabana east. General Cañas Highway will reopen after the team arrives in La Sabana. Streets in Paseo Colón will stay closed until the event has dissipated, Police Chief Juan José Andrade said. |

Not a big fan of soccer. I do applaud the CR team and wish them the best. I'm sure there were crowds but perhaps not those of another event over sixty years ago. I do remember the day when John Kennedy rode down Avenue Central to a large crown of very applauding CR supporters.John F. Kennedy was one of the first U.S. Presidents to visit Costa Rica from March 18 to March 20,1963. The Costa Ricans loved, admired and respected President John F. Kennedy. The President and his entourage came to Costa Rica to attend a summit with the presidents of six countries in Latin American. This was a historical day in Costa Rica because Mr. Kennedy received a huge turnout of Costa Ricans, more than any other Costa Rican event in the country’s history. Costa Rican school Ch*ldren lined both sides of Avenue Central to watch President Kennedy’s motorcade pass by. It was only 8 months afterward that we lost this beloved man. A side note: The crown on Avenued Central "yelled " Presidente...Presidente...That was the birth and name of the "Hotel Presidente" from the original founders of that hotel. |

Never made it through Customs and Immigration faster than on that day. The roads into downtown were closed off, but I found a savvy cabbie that new some shortcuts as most exit ramps were closed off. Made it downtown in record time, later saw the motorcade on Avenieda Seguendo. |

Circus, I was not here back when Kennedy visited here so I have no idea of the numbers of people who lined the streets. And certainly no disrespect for a great president, BUT I am here now and have been watching the TV all day. People started gathering before daylight this morning The plane was late and then they were even later leaving the airport. There were thousands at the airport, The highway into town was closed and all the way in there were people lining the highway and very large crowds in many areas. It is after 7pm now and Paseo Colon is a solid mass of humanity (The 6 lane street has been closed all day). One estimate has said "over a million people" just on Paseo Colon from Sabana Park to the Hospital de Ninas!! I live on the opposite side of town (San Pedro) and it is a total "ghost town"!!! People in the USA have no comprehension of how much people in other countries love their National teams!!! Hell Saturday even after the loss, the celebrating was unbelievable !!!!!!! Streets closed all over San Jose and the surrounding towns with thousands in the streets!! Just the crowd in the redondo in front of the Mall de San Pedro was estimated at more than 15000; and that was after a loss!! |

A.M. Costa Rica said 500,000 turned out which would be one of every 8-9 people in the country. Amazing show of pride in a superb accomplishment from La Sele!!!!! |
