Page 1 of yesterday's www.amcostarica.com has the story She was the wife of Mike Lomax who is the owner of the practice. He is an active advertiser here on CRT. No matter how much many of us who live here or visit,it can be a dangerous place. Take all precautions for your safety.

This is sad to hear. There were 3 murders in Miami yesterday. All major cities are dangerous places to live.

Burial was Monday for slain wife of U.S. expat

By the A.M. Costa Rica staff

The Costa Rican wife of a U. S. expat was buried Monday after being fatally stabbed last week in the parking lot of a dental clinic in Curridabat.

The woman, Marlin Corrales Alfaro, 38, and husband Mike Lomax had been married since 2001. She is also survived by the couple's two sons, 12-year-old Isaac and 8-year-old Mikey, and her two sisters.

Ms. Corrales was a nurse who finished at the top of her graduating class from Universidad Autónoma de Centro América. She recently earned a nurse practitioner degree, according to Lomax.

She was also an administrator at their dental laboratory, Reliable Arts Dental Lab in
Curridabat. The lab is associated with the Costa Rica Dental Clinic.

Ms. Corrales and her niece were attacked near the dental clinic Thursday. Her niece was able to take the knife out of the assailant's hand and stab him in the groin, but not after suffering serious wounds to her neck and hand. The niece was taken to Hospital Calderón Guardia, though Lomax said he transferred her to Hospital CIMA where she underwent a successful, seven-hour surgery on her hand.

Police have detained the office's security guard who was found at the crime scene and is believed to be the primary suspect.

Family members held a funeral for Ms. Corrales Monday and buried her at the Cementerio Montesacro in Curridabat.

I know it's a 3rd world shit hole, but have they ever heard of a background check? This seems to be happening way too frequently by people who are hired to protect it.

I met this woman a few times when having dental work done there. My commiserations for this sad, sad day.

I don't trust cops let alone security guards anywhere in the world including the US.

I was saddened to hear this tragic news. A life much too young to be taken.

So sad to hear about anyone getting murdered, especially a wonderful person like this young lady seemed to be. Wow, what a courageous young lady the niece is, I wish her well. :) I wonder if he was trying to rob them and they resisted? :?

No matter how powerful any of us think we are, it's probably best to immediately hand over the cash and try to walk away if confronted. I had a friend walking out of the old New York Bar around 7 pm in 2007, a car pulled up and Colombians piled out, one approached him with a gun demanding money. Being an ex marine he was of the delusion he was invincible, even in his 60's. As they say, G*d looks out for drunks, and as he tried to push the robber away he lost his balance and fell down, right as the shot was fired. The bullet pierced his hand and the robbers jumped back in their car and took off, they were caught later.

San Jose is probably not any more dangerous than Miami, New York, L.A. but the difference for us is a lot of us are on foot instead of in our cars down here and robbers know Americans usually carry a fair amount of cash. Hopefully a lot of us will make note of this sad tragic event and make an effort to be as careful as possible. Be safe, everyone, I would hate to hear of one of the brothers here unfortunately suffering a similar fate. :!:

From what I heard, it wasn't a robbery or random violence as I read on this thread. The owner encouraged the other worker to file a complaint of sexual harassment against the guard. He wanted some type of twisted revenge.

Whether or not, it's the enforcement by Police, regulators, and the Judiciary that counts...

I can't understand why God decided to call up this beautiful wife, mother and lab administrator.
I can't begin to estimate the unbearable loss to Mike, 12-year-old Isaac and 8-year-old Mikey
and the employees of the Costa Rica Dental Team (formerly known as Smile 90210).
I can only say a prayer and hope as the days and weeks go by it will ease the pain.
