Hi guys, this is my first post so please go easy ;)
I was in CR last February (2004) and had a great time - spent 5 days in Jaco. It was my first trip.
Recently I found this superb website you guys call CRT - thanks, it's a great source of information.
I'm thinking of returning to Costa Rica in a few weeks, but I'm also considering the DR - and was planning to stay in Boca Chica.

I have never been there before (in DR), and so I was wondering if anyone could advise - what's better fun, CR or DR?

I think CR last February is a hard act to beat - but I wanted to solicit opinions from anyone here who has been to both places.

If I do go to CR this time I was thinking of spending 1 night in San Jose, followed by Jaco. Are there other beach towns as good as Jaco?

Hey Dallas Nick,I went to Dominican Republic last May when the peso was at near 50 to the dollar but now it is below 30 so it isn't near the value as prices haven't come down much in peso's so they have gone up a lot in Dollars.I would rate the talent superior in Costa Rica and the variety far superior. In Costa Rica you have ticas ,doiminicanas, columbianas nicas and a few outhers mixed in where strictly Dominicanas in DR.I aso had more problems with the girls trying to change the price in the middle of the action and things like that.Costa Rica also offers far more tourist oportunities if that is of intrest.I have revisited Costa Rica 4 times with no 5 this weekend since I went to DR.I would like to go back in time but not until the exchange rate comes down or prices are more favorable.By the way I live about a couple of hours frome Dallas so get over that way fairly often.PM me if you want to get together for a cerveza and share experiences sometime.rbc100

Hey RBC: Mucho appreco for the response. I think you've almost talked me into returning to CR. In fact flights to CR are considerably less than to DR - and of course there's a direct AA flight from Dallas. I'll PM you later if I can figure out how to do it. Would love to meet for a beer and to swap stories.

Dallas Nick, If you check on line there are frequent sales form Dallas but often only last a day or two.I have flown for under $300 the last three trips and the American nonstop is nice.By the way you just missed a big sale the last few days. They usually come out 30 to 90 days out.To PM someone just hit the little pm box right under any post by the person and send the message.rbc100

DN - There are also non-stop flights from Houston to Rio on Continental. Don't get me wrong. I love CR, although I don't care for Jaco. If beach, babes and beauty is what you crave, you'll have a perpetual hard-on in Rio. Another "beach" scene can be found in Cartagena with awesome Colombian talent. But as a beach destination it's not in the league of Rio.

I'd like to try DR once. I've heard and read good things.

Nick,
I visited the DR (Santo Domingo and Boca Chica) 9 times from 1997 to 2000. My experience is dated but I've read recent reports from the DR so I believe it's still accurate.

It was fun and I made some good friends. The male friends were American ex-pats and the best girls were from Santo Domingo.

The beach is very nice but Boca Chica is a shadow of it's former self. The main hang-out for Gringos is gone, replaced by a hotel. A once great restaurant was owned by a Gringo but it's now closed. Another ex-pat passed away and a fourth moved to Thailand (at the age of 72).

Boca Chica is a small village with limited selection. The girls in Boca Chica are all as dark as the darkest Dominicans you'll meet in the Blue Marlin, not that it was ever a problem for me.

If you want a lazy, beach vacation with a little action at night Boca Chica will work. After about 2 or 3 nights there you'll realize how small it really is.

Santo Domingo is the oldest capital city in the Western Hemisphere. There is a lot of history there. There are also lots of girls to meet there.

There are clubs (nightclubs with a show) & strip clubs. I believe they all offer take-out service with varying prices. There are also a few massage parlors but overall the prices are higher than in San Jose.

There are some beauties in the clubs but there is also a lot of hustling due to competition for business and if you don't take them out they don't make any money.

If you want variety and a better overall selection in your ladies, not to mention the companionship of other CRT members, I would suggest going back to Costa Rica.

I may return to the DR someday but overall it doesn't hold a candle to Costa Rica.

Witling..

Are you refering to Ronnies bar that used to be THE gringo hangout in Boca Chica?

They replaced it with a hotel?

Times have changed. I used to hang out there in the afternoons and play guitar at "happy hour". One year it was ronnies bitrhday and we stayed up allnight partying...fine memories!

Before "discovering" Costa Rica I did 4 trips to the Dominican.I spent half my time in santo Domingo and the other half in Boca Cica. I had a very good time but I hear it has declined quite a bit since then. However since finding Costa Rica I haven't returned. (In fact I moved here to CR) That should give you my opinion.

Showerhead,
Yep, Ronnies was the place. Ronnie sold the land and they tore it down and built a hotel about 4 years ago. Ronnie is still in BC and has taken over Taxi Dave's business. Dave is the one who moved to Thailand. I just heard he's still doing fine there.

Ronnie now hangs out at "La Playa Vista" on the beach. It's owned by a couple guys from Finland or the Netherlands.

Showerhead, you weren't there for the Labor Day birthday bashes in '98, '99 or 2000, were you? They all started at Ronnies during the day then moved to Residencia El Candil in '98 and the Hotel Costalunga in '99. The 2000 party was at La Playa Vista. They were in my honor.

I have a couple friends who just got back from Boca Chica. I'll get an update from them.

DallasNick,

I had a great time in Boca Chica about 2 years ago. I thought it was one of the safest places I had ever been to. Lots of tourist police. As RBC100 stated the variety is limited. I prefer a wider selection of chicas. I had great experiences with beautiful women for $40-60.

You asked about the beach.....well Boca Chica has a very shallow crowded bay. Since you think Jaco is such a nice beach there is no doubt you should explore C.R. In my opinion, aside from Punteranas every beach in CR is better than Jaco.

Witling,

Yep...I was there for a few of those parties.

I always stayed at the Costalunga. I must know you.

Glad to hear Ronnie is still around and doing well. Is Portofino's still there?
Used to hang out with Dino Rizzi who always stayed up at the Hotel Garant and Robert who started DR1.Com years ago.

Those were some good days...now I gotta get back sometime soon...but want to go to Sosua and do the north coast.

Looking forward to your update on BC.
