I travel to costa rica twice ayea. I'm a professional musician I enjoy listening to live music. I also like to offset my trip with a couple of gigs. I would like contributors to develope a live music venue list. If you know a club, bar, restaurant supports live music I would like to start a list here. If you own or manage a live music venue I would love to hear from you. I like to offset my trips with some gigs. i am a highly acclaimed Blues/rock/swing/jump an jazz singer .I have performed a number of times and Costa Rica I usually pick up a backup band there (you have some great musicians in CR that I play with...Tim Dunford, Robbie Clark, etc.) I have performed this far south as Roadhouse 169, in Quepos posts , and various locations and San Jose( Latino Rock Cafe, Sportsman's Lodge,) etc. Please check out the site and join my email list post here if you are a live music venue or know of venues support live bands please provide phone number and contact person if its available. Killer Blues and swing that will make you dance.......

Netgems, you must be familiar with The Jazz Café locations in San Pedro and Escazu, no? Some of the most kick ass Bands perform there.

I know y'all are hip to these 2 quality listening/dancing places but for folks new to us and the CR experience:
http://www.jazzcafecostarica.com/ << a glance shows the wide variety they present--but musicians/performers better bring their A-game because the audience knows what's the deal. There maybe mutts on the floor but never on stage. Tear it up, Bro.

Netgems, just curious...where did you play in Quepos?

Nevermind...I found the post. Barba Roja in Manuel Antonio.

....if it's still there....and I do believe it is.....: It is locally called "The Colombian" but it's actual name is Chicha Rancho Alegre (lachichacr2009 at Hotmail dot com ).

This place is across the street from Day's Inn and next to the university. hole in the wall. you'll miss it/walk by it if it's day time as the door is typically shut.....but when it's open in the evening, it's hopping; filled with a younger, "hippieish" crew of college coeds and trolling for free trim ner do well locals (college types again)....and it's set up for and provides live music in the back which is typically a big time draw. It's packed and then some. Go correct if you're going to try it. The local CR blues band, Blues Devils, play that venue. http://bluesdevilsband.tripod.com/index.html from that web site you can secure the email and contact data for the band who may help.

Also, http://www.lonelyplanet.com/costa-rica/ ... los-deseos : it is just down the block from the Amistad: As you exit Amistad, go left: 4 or 5 doors down....there is the Café de los Deseos: A far quieter crowd than the other joint, but every bit (if not moreso) "fruitful" shall we say? Live bands DO play there. You ain't going to get rich but you can can't play for money anyway.....not without a work permit!

Agree; excellent place - far cry from the noise called music they play at places like the Baja Beach Club and sometimes the KL.

Classy place - nice atmosphere, too.

Not only that Scuba 1, but some of the rock/blues Bands I have seen there are better then a lot of the local bands I see here in South Florida. It may be my imagination, but the Tico Bands seem to work harder and are more dedicated to the love of the music.

Could be :)

Its a place that I think many would be interested in visiting, but many don't know about it (the problem with thinking you know Costa Rica but have seldom been out of the HDR and KL) - also, last I checked, unless you bring one with you, not a place to go looking for random girls  :P

(For all the great cocksmen out there please spare us the stories how you picked up many beautiful virgins there and deflowered them later - all I'm saying is the place is legit, and there are no whores hanging around - still the place is worth visiting!)

Also in the area; not too far from the Jazz Club is Calle de Amagura, near the University of Costa Rica, with res'ts, bars, etc where some very pretty, young college students hang out - and the majority of the board has a better chance of seeing Jesus than picking one up.

(But who knows - you could find the one beautiful non pro really into the Delrey monger look - you know, ugly ratty t shirt or fishing shirt, shorts, disgusting sandals, encasing disgusting yellow toenails, dirty stringy hair - you know - just a complete dirty slob) NOT.

I point this area out b/c its fun, you see some really pretty girls - who, again, have no interest in you - I remember the time I went there a few years ago with BangBang - one of the girls was having a birthday party - she looked more deliciosa than the cake.......yummy!

I should hope so, considering how common a name Hay-zeus is in Latin lands. Just bustin', Bro.

Also, it is important to look at the Jazz Cafe's Website to see who is playing at the 2 locations for any particular night. If you are into Latin music no problem, but if you want to hear some live Rock /Blues in English you need to check the Events Calendar first as they only have those types of bands on average several times a month.

I have been going to the Jazz Café for many years. The bands vary in quality and in type of music. Most are good, some are great. It is a comfortable little venue, probably holds 200-250 max. Food is decent, if a bit overpriced for CR. Service is excellent, even when they are busy. Cover charge is a few bucks. Best to have reservations on a busy night, which you can do online now. The original club is in San Pedro, an easy taxi or bus ride from the gulch. I was at the Escazu location only once, in January. Nice, new club. A bit harder to get to, unless you are already in Escazu. I have had many an enjoyable evening at the original club, and have met many people. If you get a chance to see any of these musicians, go for it: Nubiola, Escats, Perigrino Gris, Chocolate, Sasha Campbell, Los Tortugas. The head bartender, Luis, is very personable and will make you feel to home.

Banda SD is also a Group of note. I saw them once do great covers of Cream, Clapton and the Dominoes.
