Post subject:  CR or Cali

I am a newbie and I plan to visit CR next month with another newbie friend. We are both experienced Asian travelers both retired US Navy. From reading this board I see that the cost for mongering is much more here than Pi or Thialand. What is the average cost for having a girl all night. I have been reading the board and the information is great.
We will also spend a week in Cali, Columbia. Thanks for any info.

Onestar: Welcome to the board. You will find plenty of chicas willing to spend the night with you for cien. For the real hotties your price will go up depending on how hot she is, and how business has been for her earlier in the night. If business has been great, she might prefer just to go home.

Ihave had 7's for as little as $60 for overnight. Or you could get yoruself a novia and pay nothing....but then you will pay in other ways. Trust me.

Post subject:  Cien=$100us

Just curious about the Cien, I take it is $100us that most girls ask for an overnight work out. I am not use to paying that much, but looking at the photos in the gallery. I think I will bend the rules for a couple of them. I don't think I will spend that on a short time visit with a girl. I am not cheap, but a little thrifty with my money. I guess I will visit the MP and other bars. I don't speak a word of Spanish, so I guess I will start trying to learn a few phrases for my trip next month. Thanks guys for the info. 1star

Onestar,

You can monger in every city in Colombia, and the prices are reasonable. Cali and Medellin probably have the best action, but are not the safest. Bogota is far more safer, particularly in the northern suburbs, "La Zona Rosa."

A recent development of the U.S. extraditing a FARC Leader (yesterday) has incresed the danger level as both the Colombian government and the U.S. Embasy are making warnings of FARC reprisals and increased violence, primarily targeted towards gringos.

You took me out of context, mi amigo. Here is what I actually said:

Quote:

I stand by that quote....in it's entirety. Here is the thing with a novia. You never pay as you go. You pay when you leave. Unlike with a hooker when you pay THEM to leave. I settled up with SuperK on the last trip when I took her to downtown Alajuela and bought her a bed. $350 bucks. I had spent 4 toda la noches with her, and countless sexual romps...so I felt it was a good deal. But having a novia is costly and complicated because there is ample opportunity for misunderstanding between what YOU expect, and what SHE expects to give you. At least with a hooker it is all up front, and you pay when finished. No confusion there.

No....most girls ask for cien for ONE HOUR. It is up to you to negotiate. Many of them will take cien for a toda la noche. Some of them do not want to do a toda la noche because it takes them out of circulation for so long....so you have to investigate to find that perfect chica. As I said, I have gotten some to stay overnight with me for as little as $60, but you have to smoke em out.

Never pay cien for one hour. Some of the cien girls will just not budge off that number. If you just GOTTA have her, then try to get her to do cien for toda la noche, or two hours at least.

CR can't compare. Go to Cali. Not that dangerous, though there is some involved. Stick with metered cab out of the airport. Have your hotel call you a cab when you go somewhere. Be discrete. Don't sit at the sidewalk at a Cafe. Dress down, be polite and conservative. You'll have a ball.

If your new to the game, check out CR, learn some spanish and then go to Cali.

If you're a Pro... Run, don't walk to Cali.

I have to back up what the others have said especially HOTLUCK regarding travel to CR or Cali (great info, BTW, Hotluck). Yes, the prices are a little higher than Thailand but it is the Western Hemisphere. Different culture, different lifestyle.

Here are some steps to follow.

1. Visit CRT and other internet sites to get all the info you can.
2. Learn some Spanish. This is almost mandatory before going to Cali. At the very least carry a phrase book.
3. Visit Costa Rica first. You might find that you don't want to leave.
4. Cali is not a tourist town, it is a business city. Banks, buildings and taxis abound. It can be fun on Friday & Saturday nights but you'll have a hard time filling the rest of your time there. There are 2 or 3 casinos but I don't think they open until early evening. I wouldn't recommend going to Cali for a new traveler to Latin America with no Spanish skills unless you had a guide who spoke Spanish and you could trust. It can be done but it's not as easy as San Jose.
5. Don't wear shorts in Cali unless you want to be instantly labeled as a Gringo. It is not a beach town. Only Ch*ldren wear shorts.

If you have some Spanish and negotiating abilities you can work out taxi and girl prices to your advantage. If not you'll probably still be OK but just make sure you don't get ripped off. Since Cali is not known as a tourist destination the locals are less likely to try to scam you.

FARC is not really a problem in Cali. Of course the US State Dept. is always issuing warnings, that's their job. They've been publishing the same warnings regarding Colombia for years. Travel outside the cities is not recommended.

The biggest concern is petty crime. As a gringo you will be a target. Just travel together, keep your wits and use taxis everywhere. Of course you won't have much choice since the city is spread out.

A question for Denver about the safety of Bogota's Zona Rojo. Isn't that where the bomb went off last year in an upscale restaurant frequented by gringos?

Onestar,

My suggestion is to visit CR first and check out the variety of ladies that are available. Remember that in CR you will find not only the Ticas but Colombianas, Nicas, Dominicanas, etc. Many of the CRT brothers here on this board have wide range of taste in the ladies they prefer. My favorites are Colombianas so after having been to CR I then visited Colombia. Others have prefer Ticas and thus there's no need to go to Colombia...since there are non there.

Who knows...you preference maybe the Nicas, Dominicanas, or Honduranas. If it turns out that you don't like the Colombianas then you may not want to go to Cali or even compare it to CR.

Whiting,

You are right regarding the bombing last year in Bogota near the Zona Rosa district. The place is a Beer Garden frequented by Gringo expats. It happened late on Saturday night, I believe in September or October 2003. I was by the same bar about six months ago, and it is one block from the Atlantic Mall, there was no damage and the place was packed.

No one was killed during the blast, and I think only a couple of employees were injured; however, U.S. contractors placed the bar off limits for gringo employees. This occurred when the U.S. was stepping up the drug eradication program, and that is primarly based in Bogota. Shortly after the bombing one U.S. plane was shot down by FARC, and two Colombian soldiers and one U.S. contactor were killed; and three U.S. contractors are still being held hostage by FARC.

There has not been any more violence in La Zona Rosa since. The primary reason that I recommended this area, is for gringos first visiting Colombia it would probably be the easiest to acclomate with, and having the mongering advantage as well. Also, the malls, restaurants, and night spots are more up-scale than a lot of cities in the U.S.; and it is not that difficult to find ladies that speak fairly good English.

Your right about Cali being strictly business oriented, and while FARC may not have as strong a presence in Cali as in Medellin and the Southern regions; the street crime and kidnappings are very much a fact, and your advise is sound for remaining extremely low-key.

By the way it is not just the FARC, ELN, or AUC that you need to be concerned about. In 1982 I was sitting on a Continental plane at Eldorado airport waiting to taxi, and I was approached by a flight employee that requested my boarding pass and passport. I provided the documents, and three minutes later he returned with two soldiers, and I was escorted off the plane with my carry ons. This was a situation then of just harrassing Americans (I can provide you the reasons for this, but it relates to the Faulkland Islands), anyway after going through some hassle they let me go without ever telling me why I was detained.

I have been traveling to Colombia since 1981 (I was a lot younger then), and will be returning late March or April.

PM me if I can provde any additional information.

Hi Denver .We met breifly back in September near Labor day at least I think that was the trip .I noticed you were planning to go around early April.I was considering venturing there for my first time .I haven't decided on a city yet and curious where you were planning to go.Also would like a little feedback on where would be the best destination for a first timer.Anouther question is it safe to travel the public express bus system or is that a bad idea.Hope to hear from you soon.Brandon(rbc100)

RBC100,

Yes,we did meet at the DR last Labor weekend, and I enjoyed speaking with you.

Regarding questions about a city for a first time visit to Colombia I would aways recommend Bogota, and staying in La Zona Blue area. You can get a nice hotel room for $ 40 - $ 50 US, and be in walking distance from some fantastic malls whch are a good place to meet non-pros (and in my opinion are more upscale than most of the malls in the U.S., or at least in the greater Denver, CO area). Also, there are many bars, night spots, MP's, restaurants, and casinos within walking distance. Security is high at all times, so don't be surprised to see National Police or Military with police dogs or uzis. It is a much different environment than San Jose.

The population of Bogota is over 8 million, and the area thatI described above is the safest and nicest in the metro area. While I enjoy San Jose and traveling to CR, this metro area makes all of San Jose appear to be a big slum in my opinion, with no disrespect to San Jose intended. Downtown Bogota is great to visit during the day time, but head back north when the sun goes down. Do not go south of downtown anytime, and this is where the majority of the population lives. I have been in this area once, and the slums that you would see would make the slums of San Jose seem like an up scale neighborhood

Other cities for a first timer would be Cartegena, Barranqilla, and Santa Marta. They are all on the Carribean Coast which is the primary tourist area for Colombia. Unlike Costa Rica there is nothing on the Pacific side.
You can have a great time in any of these cities; however, Santa Marta while being the nicest beach area to visit would be the worst choice for mongering. You can get good mongering action in Cartegena and Baranqilla. Both of these cities are gringo friendly, and relatively safe.

Regarding public transportation, more people do not have cars than those that do. All cities have large pubic bus sytems, and the only one that I have used is the Millenium Bus in Bogota. My recommendation is taxis all the time. The drivers are reliable, the cost is very cheap, and I have never had a bad experience. While you can travel by bus between cities, DON'T. Even though the distance seems short, pay the extra and take a flight. Rebels routinely stop the busses and rob and kidnap passengers.

I hope that this helps, and if you want any more specific information PM me.

Thanks Denver,I will probably PM you for some details but I think either Bogota or Cartegena will be my choice.Would I be somewhat safe to travel alone in that area if I follow you suggestions.I had heard some of the buses might be robbed.rbc100
