If you haven't back to CR in a while and have some old currency, you can still exchange it to the new currency but only at one bank and here's a step by step from Rico at QCosta Rica:

About two or three months ago, had a buddy fly in with some old colones. The bank upstairs at the airport changed them no questions asked... No idea if they still will but worth a shot as it is so easy/convenient

Hell yes, if they're doing it still. Can anyone report back, even if you want to dump your colones on the way out--it's next to the exit tax counters. Hell of a lot simpler then going to tthe bank. Colonial casino was still taking them for a while after, not sure now.

Right when they switched over and gave out the "deadline", I was in the smoking bar in the basement at SJO which no longer exists, and I had a bunch of colones I wanted to use up. Bartender tried telling me they were only "soveniers" now. I think he was angling for my souveniers. Glad I held on to them, Colonial took them with no problem next trip.

I brought down my old ones a few weeks ago, and left them for the maids everyday. Apparently, they had no problem taking them--they must have been regular souvenir collectors

That beats the hell out of the Goodwill tchotchkes I used to bestow.
