Post subject:  Daily CR e-newspapers

Some are in english, the spanish ones can be google translated for at least a half assed idea of what the story is. The spanish ones will keep you informed about CR when you are not there, the english ones also but also with stories of interest to ex-pat's.

These are the main ones I have found and read daily. Maybe there others. Mine are not listed in any certain order of good, bad, or average. Most of the spanish ones have hard copy editions daily in CR. All of these below have lots of great CR foto's daily. Diario tends to be a little gorey and scandalous at times just as its' hard copy edition is in CR but it's popular, I think because of that.

Most of the english e-papers listed are not updated much on a daily basis, maybe just one or two new stories a day, still worth taking a peek. My gripe with some of the english e-papers is they will pimp themselves and write veiled complimentary stuff about their paid advertisers; you'll be able to figure out which ones, but still often carry good stories not reported in the others. For example, a story about the top 3 dental offices catering to gringos in SJ. And then you'll see that the one listed as #1 has paid ads, and continuously has had paid ads, on another page; or worse, will have a link to a supposedly independent free booklet with advice on where to get the best dental in SJ, and it eventually directs you to that dental advertiser's office. Too obvious. Tough biz to make a living at I guess.

Here goes:
______________________________________________________________________

Diario Extra, very popular spanish daily hard copy paper in CR, leans toward the sensational. Here's their e-copy http://www.diarioextra.com/

A.M Costa Rica http://www.amcostarica.com/index.htm (english-updated fully daily M-F).
Be sure to sign up for the daily e-mail summaries which you will get early in the morning and you can pick and choose which stories you want to read, a time saver. This paper is the one that has been around the longest in e-format and is very successful. So you get tons of advertising, in addition to very, very good CR stories. And the owner/editor has quit publishing negatively about us and the gulch scene, which he did on more then one occasion, either in a story or an editorial periodically, ever since the DelRey became a daily sponsor a few years ago now. Such is life everywhere in every biz, I guess.

But the email thing is a way to cut thru the bull by picking the stories you want to read, because he runs alot of American or int'l stories that have nothing to do with CR and are better covered in your American hard or e-edition dailies, so a waste of time reading every page. No clue why he does that other then to add another page to put in more ads. But, for the CR stuff, very well worth reading. Here's how to get the daily email list of their stories. http://www.amcostarica.com/subscribe.htm

The Tico Times, was the only successful and oldest hard copy gringo paper in CR for years, but failed a year or so ago and is now only digital. http://www.ticotimes.net (english)

la Prensa Libre. A popular hard copy spanish CR paper, here's their e-copy. http://www.prensalibre.cr/

LaNacion. Probably the biggest circulation of spanish hard copy papers in CR. More of an American style paper in the way they present and report CR news, as opposed to the Diario's sensational style of e.g., graphic fotos of dead people hanging out of cars after a wreck in color and close up on the front page. Here's LaNacion's e-edition. http://www.nacion.com

Inside Costa Rica http://insidecostarica.com (english)

Qcostarica http://qcostarica.com/edition/ (english)

CR Hoy A spanish e-paper http://www.crhoy.com/

Costa Rica Star http://news.co.cr/costa-rica/ (english)

Thank's to the OP for the compilation of CR e-news outlets.

CRT does provide alot of "non gulch" news about CR provided by very well informed ex-pat's and others, but obviosuly a high percentage of posts on the board deal with CRT guys interests & likes of members, of course.

Members aren't joining or reading CRT for non gulch issues and so wouldn't have learned about the Circumvention (SJ's Beltway) now largely being unusable in crucial areas; the new bus route system (finally); outrageous amounts of arsenic in the tap water in parts of Guanacaste; streams being intentionally poisoned to easily catch dead shrimp for resale; violent criminal acts and where; scams; what is going on in the CR judicial system; their financial markets (lending rate down today); who is running for president & politics; various human interest stories like the current huge backlog for non-emergency surgeries; etc. And there are always alot of interesting photo's of various parts of the country; and alot of good ads for tourist things to do or professional services that you don't see on CRT.

Reading the e-daily's is a great way to be informed about CR issues that you are not regularly going to find on CRT if you don't live there and so can't watch the TV news and that's if you are interested in the rest of CR[/u].

And gives you an idea of the Tico perspective of life, of themselves and of us. Hard to say "I know CR" (other then the gulch) if you don't live there and what is happening outside of the Gulch other then thru what their media is reporting.

Obviously there are alot of guys that could care less about anything other then the gulch, or just don't want to be bothered w/ CR news, and that's perfectly and entirely understandable and cool.

And there are a few more spanish daily's that have an e-edition that are good, just couldn't find the links for them for the post. I think Al Dia is one. Other guys can chime in.
