Post subject:  Request for Info: Nicoya Peninsula

La senora and I will be in Costa Rica in November for a little over a week, and will be spending a little time in the gulch at La Amistad. The rest of the time, we will be on the road (in a rental car) exploring CR. Two days at Arenal (Tabacon Resort) are already accounted for. Another day or two will be spent visiting my tico family and amigas. That leaves us with 2 or 3 days to either explore a new destination or visit old, familiar places. Other than a day in the Tortuga Islands, I have never been to the Nicoya Peninsula. For this reason, I would like to check out the southern Nicoya Peninsula (eg Tambor, Montezuma or Mal Pais). I researched an informative website on Nicoya that gave a decent account of locations and activities. It gave me a good general idea of what to expect. However, I would appreciate any input from the board regarding any must-see, bucket list type locations or things to do in the southern end of the peninsula.

If you are going to be driving around the Nicoya Peninsula, be sure and rent a 4X4 car. LOT of roads there are really bad, especially in the middle of the rainy season. And be sure and have a cell phone for any problems you might encounter.

Good advice on an SUV, make it a large one, diesel powered. You may run into some deep streams to cross in Nicoya this time of year. For me I rather do the trip in dry season.

However, since you asked.....a small resort that is fantastic is located in Playa Coyote.

I would not suggest trying to reach it from Cobano, but rather there is another way in, further to the north which takes you through numerous cattle ranches. We did the trip in this way and returned by way of Cobano in May and encountered two streams at least 3 ft. deep. (I was wishing we had a winch on the front end but we made it OK) If you take the ferry from Puntarenes to Playa Naranjo there is a route that takes you to Playa Coyote passing the ranches and a few very shallow streams. A long ride from San Jose but worth it!
