To those of you who move comfortably through our electronic world:

I've been shopping for a voice translator. English to Spanish and Spanish to English.
I'm not looking for an application for a desktop, laptop, tablet for phone. A handheld unit about the
the size of a phone.

Would appreciate any suggestions those of you in the know may have.

Check on e bay. There a three basic units. Mid $300s to $650.00
Non of which I have ever used. The best units are military grade.
The problem there is its at $1,000.00+. I stick with basic google translate
on an unlocked mytouch 4g. Like all things electrical it has its moments.

I've not seen any handheld units that do voice recognition. But I will second the nomination for the new google translate app for Android. I've downloaded a number of offline language packs for it, and if you have a data connection it will also do voice translation via their servers.

I was looking into this a couple of years back.. Pricing of a voice one was about $300 so I opted for the cheaper $75 ones and they all sucked.

If money is an issue, you can get a used or older model iphone/itouch off ebay. There are tons of voice translator aps. The free google one is awesome!

And excellent suggestion that I have used many times on my numerous trips to San Jose.

Never had a problem finding a girl in the Blue Marlin that would translate for me all day for 20 bucks.

I'm venturing off to Panama and cannot rely on that source.

Thanks for the suggestions probably will go with one of Lingo's products.

Hey this isnt some star trek episode.

Take it from someone with 25+ years of Hispanic market experience: computer translators NEVER EVER work. Never.

That is all.

If you use an iphone or ipad you can use an app. called "SayHi".

You speak in english and it gives the spanish transalation. If it does not transalate your voice correctly you can type in you message and it will translate it. Costs $0.99. Kind of works enough to communicate.

Also "google translate" app for free.

If attempting to make a real connection with another culture I'm sure you would be correct. Nothing would ever approach being able to speak their language.

But you see this guy Lee is as shallow as they come. I would know that because I am him. His only interest is to make sure that she understands what is expected of her in the next couple of hours. And that what she does will have a significant impact on her earning potential for the next few days.


For that level of communication I'm sure a translator will work just fine.

SayHi works rather well, but there are times it will really mess up what your trying to say.. I do feel it does a better job than Google's app though.

You can now type in what you want to say if it does not say the right thing.

What I wonder is which Spanish version to use in CR.

Spanish - USA or Spanish Mexico.

There is also Spanish - Spain
