Post subject:  Turning on DVD Subtitles
I recently bought the movie Maria Llena de Gracia thinking I could learn some stuff by using the Spanish subtitles. I am watching it on my computer, and can't seem to turn the subtitles on. There is a control on the video menu to do it, but when I select it and play the film the subtitles aren't there.

I have tried it using HP Media Smart and Windows Media Player. Has anybody run into this difficulty, and could you suggest any hacks? I'm pretty much stuck with watching it on my laptop.

I had the same thought. I have not found a single movie yet that had Spanish Subtitles matching what was being said onscreen. Let us know if you do.

But you can do the same thing with Spanish songs with lyrics on you tube :idea:

First of all, does the movie even have subtitles? It should say it on the box. Second, if it does... do you have an original copy? Some bootlegs are missing features.

On Windows Media Player, go to the title menu (the icon to do this is labeled DVD and is on the left-hand side of the bottom banner), then go to "languages" and choose "Spanish subtitles" and "play movie."

I just did this with an Amazon purchased copy of "Maria Llena de Gracia" on my laptop and it worked fine. Do you have a bootleg copy?

With DirecTv on some of the movie channels (HBO, HBO2, Showtime, Starz, etc) you are able to watch a movie in English or Spanish and also have the subtitles in English or Spanish. I have watched several movies in Spanish with English subtitles and English with Spanish subtitles. You can also watch in Spanish with Spanish subtitles.

They never match. That is: The Spanish audio is different than the Spanish subtitles.

Not sure if this will help or not. A program my son made we aware of is called "BS.Player Free"
You can download it for free. He downloaded about 25 movies in spanish for me. You open your movie using BS.Player Free, then pick your choice of subtitles in whatever language, download it from the internet (takes 20 seconds?) then watch your movie with these subtitles. Almost always good.
Not sure how it works for DVDs but may be worth a try.

Oh, maybe I did not make clear. These are all Spanish movies and "Maria Llena de Gracia" is one of them.

Thanks guys for all the suggestions, and especially to El Tranquillo for looking at the Windows Media Player and providing directions. What's weird is that when I select Title no other menu becomes available, but the menu music starts over. Also there's a selection for "captions" with Spanish as a choice, but that doesn't turn it on.

I bought it at Amazon so it would be full-featured...so I'm still at a loss. The only thing I can think is that I got my computer in Costa Rica and maybe it's player reads the Amazon disk as a bootleg because when I first put it in it says: "Windows Media Player cannot play the DVD. The disc was created in a manner that the Player does not support."

As I mentioned, check the packaging and see if subtitles is a feature of the DVD. Not all movies have it, especially foreign films not made in the US!

Also, you won't see the titles option in the menu. You have to play the movie first.
