Post subject:  Best anti-virus software?

When we travel, a lot of the time we have to connect to open (unsecured) networks, so what is the best anti-virus to have?

My McAfee is about to expire and I'm not crazy about paying another $85/2 years, or some other shitty price. I remember reading on the board there is free anti-virus software that's pretty good.

Any advice to keep my computer safe?

Thanks

I'd bet AVG and Avast are the 2 most popular free ones, and you can upgrade for whistles and bells.

On one notebook I have AVG and on another right next to it runs Avast. I caught a virus from one site last week which I use both computers to access. AVG was not picking it up. Avast was going crazy w/ warnings whenever I visited the site, an ordinarily safe site. The next morning the administrator of that site notified users that they found the problem, and my Avast stopped going off. So, I'd say Avast.

Trend Micro is probs the best free one.
Kaspersky for money.

AVG. I replaced my McAfee about three years ago and haven't had an issue since. Avast is pretty good and well.

I run AVG and also have Malwarebytes installed. I use Firefox for a browser and recommend against using Internet Explorer.

A few years ago, a guy on the ISOC board recommended 4 free maintenance programs to me:

1. Microsoft Security Essentials
2. Malwarebytes Anti-malware
3. Piriform Defraggler (for defragmenting)
4. Piriform CCleaner (for cleaning out junk files and registry)

I have used these exclusively on all 3 or my computers, and all 3 run perfectly. There are no conflicts between the programs, and I do not have the issues I had when using McAfee. I highly recommend installing all 4 of these programs.

Orange-
Years ago I ditched McAfee & Norton and now use 1, 2 & 4 above in conjunction with Avast (free version). I've had no issues whatsoever in 5+ years...

Orange...there's no need to pay for programs like McAfee and Norton when there are very good free AV programs out there. I use Avast on 3 computers and AVG on another and have not had any problems at all. As has been said here also, download Malewarebytes and CCcleaner, with all 3 of these programs your PC will run great!! Run them all once every few weeks and you'll be good.

I have Avast and btw every time I come to CRT forum, it alerts me with:

avast! saved your computer from crashing
You just dodged a bullet

You may be wondering how you ended up with a virus, especially if you were visiting a ‘normal’ site. The latest research from the avast! Virus Lab shows that more than 80% of malware (viruses, spyware, and the like) spreads through legitimate websites, with only 1% coming from suspicious or ‘dodgy’ sites.

Good thing avast! had your back.

It goes on to say:

Infection Details
URL: http://114700url.displayadfeed.com/cpv.j...
Process: C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome\App...
Infection: URL:Mal

It does this when I use firefox and chrome, but not IE.

Howdy
I have not had any virus's that were not caught in about eight years when I started using Kaspersky at the advice of a good friend who knows tech, I don't. It is a pay system but you can usually get a key for three computers for $40/$60 cheap compared to fighting viruses.

That was the message I was getting on IE. Admin1 solved the problem, advised all to clear their cache, everything is fine.
