Or maybe it was the 19th century that street signs were installed in most capital cities.

Next week I will have lived in the same place in Costa Rica for nine years, Who knew until today that I live on avenida 4 just east of calle 86 :?:

Yes you skeptics street signs have really come to the San Jose suburbs. :P

Naturally if I take a taxi that will mean nothing to the choffer I will still have to give him "Tico" directions

holy cow. You keep hearing and hearing the rumors, and when a rumor one is skeptical of finally comes through it's such a big, yet pleasant, shock. Now, how long to finish the project? Beyond that, how long will it take people to convert to using addresses?

and it's not 20th century, it's 19 century at best! lol

I remember getting in a cab on my second trip and me and crt member chris long trying to explain to the driver forever we wanted to go to calle 6 and avienda 5. It was rather comical as he kept flagging down other taxis asking for directions and everyone being so confused as if we asked them a trick question. We finally just got out and walked. Street signs or not gonna take a long time to change from x number of meters from insert landmark here.

Just remember the HDR is the center of the universe: all map coordinates start from there.

If you look at Google maps, you will see that a lot of the numbered avenues have actual names. Av 7 is called Avenida Roosevelt, which happens to be the nearest av to where I live. I have NEVER heard it called that by ANYONE, Tico or Gringo. As far as Paseo Colon and Av 2, it's Paseo Colon before the bend near the hospital, then becomes Paseo Colon again up the hill near where it crosses the tracks. This is also, incidentally, the Pan American Highway, or was. There was talk of changing over to the coastal hwy when the Quepos to Dominical portion of the coast hwy was finally paved. I don't get down that way often so somebody else can confirm or deny.
