In my state, all of her audio/video recordings would be inadmissable against the potential defendants/Johns because we are one of the 50% +/- of states that require both sides consent to record without a warrant, so there would only be a case against her. I guess Maine is apparently one of those states that only requires one sided consent.
A fella would be wise to find out what the law is in his state to whether he can tape aonther peron's conversation without their consent for situations or circumstances a guy is in, either for defensivel or proactive purposes.
I have one hooked up to my office phone and one at home, but I have to get consent from the one I want to tape in my state.
The newer digital recorders are terrific, record multiple different conversations and 50+ hours of talk time, and you can do a USB hook up to a computer and then it converts any particular recorded conversation to a Windows Media File for storage on your computer. The point is no more of keeping track of a bunch of mini/micro cassettes. They are also smaller, thinner and lighter then a typical smart-phone for putting/recording in your jacket pocket.
Her motive for secretely taping wasn't revealed in the article, but I cannot think of one that doesn't stink.

PS: I wonder if there is a law in CR about the same issue. Sure seems that in CR there are a lot of disputed "I said, she said", or "the officer said but I showed him" situations, amongst other situations (from hotels to rent cars to you name it) where a record may help a fella. Probably not a good idea if your tape shows you are right and the powers are wrong, you'll probably get charged under some statute making it illegal since 1901 since even before the technology was available, and that guarantees you'll be in the hole for a while.
