It appears that our dear friend John (the owner of the DR) must be encountering some financial difficulty.NOT He has just raised his already highest in SJ drink prices. A Bavaria or an Imperial now costs 1050 colones instead of the 850 to 900 before.I was also amazed when I bought a Coke for a chica and it was 900 colones. Maybe he is trying to keep up with the constant devaluing of the colone, but it does appear to be a bit greedy. I really hope that the new hotel at the Colonial casino has some impact here.

OK Admin 1 you are absolutely correct.I would like to recant my previous content and replace it. "The Del Rey has generously decided to reduce all drink prices by one-half for all CRT VIP members. " Don't forget to show your card.We all owe a debt of Grattitude to Admin 1 and to John the owner of the DR OK Admin 1,you wanted fluff, now you've got it. Now all you have to do is deliver.

VB ....you are our best frontline reporter.. kudos bud.

I had dinner over at the Del Rey Restaurant which has expensive TVs, marble, and ornate finish work. The fish dish I had was phuckin' inedible and I sent it back.

I think he is trying to recover from the expense of this disaster of a restaurant.

. Normally, I would agree with that statement. Just another example of how our little paradise has become lost. It's getting to be a matter of principle. Ahh..the good old days..all the bars had a happy hour in the afternoon and 2 Imperials could be bought for 500 colones. Usually, the bocas were gratis as well. This was when the colones were 250 to a dollar.

I can't speak for all countries but, this is happening in the Dominican as well. Business people get used to a certain profit and do what they must to keep up. Where oh where will the next paradise be found? :?:

Unfortunately these increases are a reality of operating in 3rd world economies and currencies like Costa Rica. While I have not kept a running tab on how much the colone prices at the Delrey have increased the past year, devaluation of the colone is running over 13% per year. While I agree that the prices at Delrey are high and highest for the area, the colone prices may not be out of line to keep the margins they are seeking from us gringos. I like the Circus approach...stash a few minis in your pockets, and order tonic or soda water on the rocks

A cerveza at Juan Santamaria Internation Airport (SJO) is 1400 colones. A cerveza at the Supermercado Auto Mercado is 400 colones. Everplace else is pretty much in between.

Plus there's the recent ZB VIP price increase to c18,000.

Not only is the devaluation rate high, there is also double digit inflation in colones. Prices increases should be expected. Let's hope it doesn't spill over to the chicas on our side of the bar at the BM.

As usual, any increase in price has the trickle
down effect. Instead of giving the young lady
behind the bar at the BM 1000 colone and
letting her keep the change for a 900 colone bill,
now I will most likely just give her 1100 colone
for a 1050 bill and let her keep 50 colone.
I knew those 100 colone coins would be put to
good use one of these days... :o
Same for ZB, with the VIP discount, one hour
was 17,000 colone, now it's 18,000
instead of giving the young lady a 3,000 colone
tip, it will now only be 2,000.
Do I feel like a cheap bastard...nope.

A bottle of Imperial at the Park Hotel, before it closed, was 800 colones.

Park Hotel 800

Del Rey 1050

Anyone think if the Park was still open they would go there so they could save half a buck a cerveza?

I usually go to other bars, in part due to the prices, but also to be able to relax, without the constant hustle. I'm spoiled living in a small town, where a beer during happy hour is more like the prices in Tico bars.

The Piano Bar, the News Cafe or NY were OK in the evening when I stayed at the Prez. I usually had a zarpe at one of them. Nashville South can be amusing too. There are always local bars that are MUCH cheaper than the DR, or the Park for that matter.

Prices change so fast! I remember getting returnables by the case in Pavas for less than 100C per beer. Cans were more, but glass is heavier, so those of us on foot often make different choices.

Hola Gentlemen

just for the record the price for VIP CRT members is 17000 colones.. the price did NOT go up.

the difference is when you pay by credit card then there is a 1000 colone surcharge that gets tacked on by the credit card company.

Just wanted to make sure there is no confusion

if someone paid 18000 without a credit card just pm me and I will resolve it right away.

best to all

Eddie
