Interesting article from today's Inside Costa Rica. What I found surprising is the time of day they identify as the hours when crime is the highest.

Bus stops, hospital surroundings most dangerous places in the country

SAN JOSE, COSTA RICA – September 30th, 2012 – The “Coca Cola” bus stop, as well as the surroundings of San Juan de Dios Hospital, Calderon Guardia Hospital, Hospital Mexico, and the Central Market and its surrounding areas are the favorite places for criminals to commit their crimes in San Jose.

This comes according to the “heat maps” of criminal activity that Seguridad Pública had on display last week, which also showed that the hours from 4pm to 6pm are primetime for criminals preying on citizens.

The capital city remains the most crime-ridden area of the country.

According to Walter Navarro, Vice Minister of Security, criminals prefer these areas because they are congested, especially during the evening rush hours.

Navarro also mentioned that places such as Pavas, Desamparados, Hatillos, and Montes de Oca continue to be plagued by criminals.

Both the Fuerza Publica and the Municipal Police pay special attention to these areas, but advise citizens to always be alert, especially in the areas identified.

I was surprised that Montes de Oca (San Pedro area) was on that list. I guess it is true that SJ centro crime has moved to the 'burbs.

Yes, the hours, 4 - 6 pm, are surprising. It seems as if the criminals strike when everyone is leaving work and picking stuff up at stores. The area around Calderon Guardia Hospital (Barrio Otoya) is surprising as well. Pavas, Hatillo & Desamperados are no surprise. I remember my amiga, who lives in Pavas, used to tell me "Don't get out of the car!" whenever I drove into her neighborhood.

was surprised at the mention of the Calderon Guardia hospital. I usually stay at the Amistad & usually head towards the hospital many times in a week to hit the farmacia, a soda for lunch, store, atm, etc. I never perceived it as being a high-crime area.

Just walk very fast and with purpose like I do. Tico thieves are too lazy to put any effort into chasing you down or exerting energy to rob you. :D
