Looks like San Jose will finally get street signs:
Quote:
Signs with the number of every street and avenue will be placed at the corners and buildings of the capital, San José, starting in September, confirmed San José Mayor Johnny Araya.

The project was proposed four years ago, but it required the approval from the Comptroller General.

“The 16,000 signs to be installed will include the name of the street or avenue ... and will also display the logo of the municipality of San José,” Mayor Araya said.

The first stage of the labeling is already scheduled to begin along Paseo Colón in downtown San José. Authorities expect to finish the project within six months.

Identifying the streets will help tourists get around and also be useful for public and private companies, Araya said. Ticos, too, will be able to leave their reference-point system behind, he added.

And if they are made of anything of value they'll be down the day after they put them up.

It makes it more fun to get around w/o the street signs. I like an adventure. My litmus test for how well I speak spanish is my ability to communicate with taxistas. Once you can understand a tico taxista, you can consider yourself proficient in Espanol.

And if Costa Rica mail starts going to house numbers & street addresses, instead of locations with paragraph-long descriptions, life will be good.

If you think you will see this system functioning in our lifetime, you might be delusional :)

Even if they put the signs up tomorrow and given everyone an address a week later, it probably won't be useful until at least the current young generation grows up. Heck, I was looking for an address in Alajuela last time down and I had the two cross streets and the taxi driver asked a group of old timers sitting at a cafe where it was and they didn't know. Turned out the street we were looking for was two over from were those old timers were, Lol.

Human beings being what they are, old habits die hard, and I suspect "Tico directions" will be a fact of life for at least a couple of generations to come.

The Boston area didn't have street signs for a long time ("If yah doan't know wheah yah ah, then yah doan't belawng thayuh") and tico-style directions were common: "Take a left at the Dunkin' Donuts, go straight at the Dunkin' Donuts, go kinda-left but not hahd-left at the othah Dunkin' Donuts, right at the Dunkin' Donuts, and then you're thayuh. It's across the street from Dunkin' Donuts." Municipalities have been putting up street signs of late but locals still give directions by landmarks rather than street names.

Too funny GVI I went to boston for the first time last winter and I noticed dunkin donuts EVERYWHERE, they should change their motto to boston runs on dunkin donuts.

I agree old habits die hard and people are very resistant to change.

According to an article in Inside Costa Rica they are suppose to start putting up the signs tomorrow.

Quote:
San Jose to get street signs

SAN JOSE, COSTA RICA – September 26th, 2012 – Have trouble finding your way around San Jose? Well, it might get a little bit easier when tomorrow the municipality of San Jose begins to put up street signs to identify the streets and avenues of the city.

The municipality says the idea is to have a more precise and easier system to locate addresses in San Jose.

A total of 16,000 signs will be placed within the capital city.

Once the main roads are identified, buildings and homes will also be assigned numbers so that they can be more easily located.

The project was financed by the Banco Nacional and Banco de Costa Rica, and as such will carry the banks’ logos.

The cost of the project will be 600 million colones (about $1.2 million USD).
