I mean, of course, can you buy books from there?

You can buy books anywhere you can get an Internet signal.

I have had a Kindle for over a year and have had no problem downloading directly to my Kindle using my home network. That is not the situation with a B&N Nook. Last I knew you could not download direct to the Nook. A friend who brought a Nook down on vacation contacted B&N when he was here and could not download. They told him it was blocked because of copyright issues and they had no plans to change their policy.

unfortunately I am not sure it is correct that a Kindle will work in Costa Rica... atleast in a downloading sense.

I bought one about 2 years ago and unfortunately broke it about half way through the first book I was reading on it (took a year or so to remember I had bought it on a trip home to Texas and it was still sitting in a box in my office here in Costa Rica).

With that being said, I never had a chance to download any books from Costa Rica. When I bought it I downloaded a few books while in Texas but later forgot I had the thing until I read all the real books I had at that time.

Just last night I was in the CRT chat and was asking a goodfella if I could ship one to his address and him bring it to me in a couple of weeks. I asked a couple of friends at lunch today if anyone had a kindle. One friend responded that he did but was disappointed as he could not always download the books he wanted while he is in Costa Rica. He is going to bring his kindle to work tomorrow and I will try and download a couple of books I would typically read and see if I can do it here.

I will let you know what I find out!

Early model Kindles could not wifi download in Costa Rica you had to download to your pc and then transfer it to the Kindle. The later models all have wifi capability that works in CR. I do not know the exact date of the introduction of the later models but I bought mine in March of 2011 and it can download directly to the Kindle in Costa Rica.I have downloaded over 50 books and have never had one not show up on my Kindle in less then 30 seconds.

Anybody use the Kindle Fire in CR? Supposedly you can web browse. I guess if you can download books the browsing and media-downloading (Netflix I think) parts of it would work as well.

I am sitting in my room at HLA and just purchased a book on my Kindle via Wifi (as gdizzle said, Amazon 3g doesn't work in CR).

Mine works dandy, and I have Irish Drifter to thank for talking me into buying one. My worst problem was 'registering' it, since I do not have wi fi in my apt. The registration process is somewhat of a pain and I did it mostly to be able to do 'collections' so I could find stuff easier. The Amazon folks are smart. They don't want you to just get stuff for free, though I admit I have an awful lot of great stuff for free. But then I'm not interested in the latest bio from the latest 15 minutes of fame celebrity. It's worth it to me for what I can get just from Project Gutenberg. Darren Mora is a nice guy, but I have set foot in his shop for the last time. My feet barely fit in there anyway...
