Hey guy. Can anyone tell me what "PORFA SIIII" means. I have been trading emails with a chica and she seems not to be able to spell in her own language. I have asked many spanish speaking friends but none have any idea. The rest of the email consists of wishing me a great Christmas. I have a feeling that she want me to send her a Christmas present. Maybe I will fly down and just her one.  |

porfa is short for por favor in costa rica so sounds like "yes please" with giggles and excitment |

HAHA I have been having similar issues while exchanging some emails with one I met down there. It has helped my spanish studies a little though, I think, puzzling through her bad CAPS LOCK SPELLING. And no, its not the one you are thinking guys

I've seen the same with a few, they spell as it sounds which makes it hard to translate. Here's some help Furryman- http://translation2.paralink.com/ It has spellcheck and will translate, only thing is you need to figure out what word she's trying to spell...

PacoLoco, That like is great it actually is better than the one I was using at www.freetranslation.com. In fact it confirmed that she is asking me to send her a nice present and she will send one as well. It honestly wouldn't be worth it unless it was her friend Rebecca.  I suppose I'll send something, I don't want to spend a fortune on shipping so it will be somthing small. |

If you have Word 2002 or higher you can download the Costa Rican Dictionary and translator free of charge from the microsoft website. It corrects the bad spelling, grammar etc then your translation is more true to life. |

It works fairly well, but it takes about three or four 'passes', with spelling and grammar corrections on my part, to get close to the intended meaning of the message/letter. I'd be interested what algorithms the translator you mentioned uses to correct the spelling and grammar mistakes. I suppose if a word did not match a valid word in the dictionary, the algorithm could attempt to correct phonetic errors by substituting 'v' for 'b' etc. Correcting the grammatical, syntactic and semantic errors would be more difficult. Most of the chicas use atrocious spelling and grammar. I've corresponded with chicas from all backgrounds and education levels, and the differences are minimal. Even the college-educated chicas can't write an error-free letter/email! Pathetic. I had a couple of chicas who would never use periods at the end of sentences. That makes it very difficult for translation software. It was like the letter/email was one long sentence. I told them a couple of times to use periods at the end of sentences. It would improve for perhaps one letter/email, then the following correspondences would revert to the same format. I realize that many college-educated people in the US can't spell or form proper sentences, but how hard can it be to add a period at the end of a sentence?! |

GT: I actually use the dictionary to actually correct grammar & Spelling prior to doing the translations. I am quite sure any translation program will work well, once you use the dictionary to make the attrocious grammar of the chicas readable and able to translate. |

I downloaded this on Admin's recommendation. It apparently does NOT work with anything above Word 2002. I use Word 2003 and it would not recognise it. And I found nothing which even mentioned a Costa Rican dictionary that Admin mentioned. The Microsoft site apparently does not suggest an update to it. The company that actually provided it to Microsoft does not appear to have either an update to it, or a new one for Word 2003. They do sell a quite expensive piece of software which apparently will work with later versions of Word. Ye Old Man |

Just received this from World Lingo the company which wrote the translation program for Microsoft Word referred to by Admin 1. Quote: Thank you for your message. Unfortuantely to date, the plugin only works for Ms Word 2002 and not the 2003 version. No updates have been scheduled at this stage. Ye Old Man |
