Planning to bring a lady friend to CR in September, one day in SJO and then on to the beach; later, on to Panama for a few days. My question is whether it will be too rainy. I usually go to CR/Panama in January and May. What do you think, weather-wise?

Depends, How much do you like Rain ?

I was there one September in '89 (around that year) when CR had 100" in that month alone.

(to get an idea of how much 100" is: Florida, which is considered sub-tropics, gets 100" in a YEAR on average)

I can tell you sewage (not very good even in dry weather) and other such infrastructure was definetly not even up to handling all that water.

Several roads were wiped out and people living in shacks were lost in various floods.

Not to mention flights canceled, power outages, and general chaos.

I will be relocating to CR at the end of this month. I am hoping to schedule all my travel outside CR during September when possible.

Then again, I was there for a week last September and never used my umbrella. I guess timing is everything.

But to all there own, i hope you have fun.

September and October are the rainiest times of year. Last September, we had really bad rains and closed several highways. The highway between Quepos and Jaco was completly washed out. The Pan-American Highway was completely washed out and closed for weeks. The new highway from San Jose to Jaco was also closed periodically as was the San Jose to Limon highway.

This year, it might be drier but you can count on at least a few hours of rain each day at the least, usually in the late afternoon or early evening. That doesn't really present a problem but a week straight like last year could. Wish I could predict what it'll be like this year...

Here's a graph of temp and rainfall in CR (click on the "temperature and precipitation" button to get both on the one chart). This should put "paid" to anecdotal discussions: http://www.weather.com/outlook/travel/v ... y/CSXX0009

My girlfriend kept bugging me to take her along on one of my trips and I never had the balls to do it. She likes girls as much as I do so it would have been interesting to say the least. The bringing sand to the beach is classic though.
