I often give advice to the newbies,so now it is my turn to ask for some from the other experienced mongers. JUST WHAT THE HELL DO THESE CHICAS DO WITH ALL THE TOILET PAPER THEY USE THAT WINDS UP IN THE WASTE PAPER BASKET? It's getting expensive. lol

They don't believe in flushing toliet paper as most of their dwellings can't handle it with little to NO water pressure in the toilets. They are taught to put it in the wastebucket... So that paper you see if filled with well you can guess...

yeap...you are correcto...even in my office in SJO and PTY it is put in the waste paper basket...and in the SJO office there is a sign asking you to do so! The joys of the third world! Hey bob, why dont you pull it out and inspect it...if it is clean enough...recycle and reuse!

no it is the gringas whose shit doesnt stink (or at least they think it doesn't). Which reminds me of a little story! I dated a girl a long time ago...in a place far far away, and she claimed that she never in her life had farted?! A prissy gringa no less....but I found it so hard to believe that a 21 year old girl could even think I could believe that!

Nice try, water pressure in toilets? I think the correct answer for not flushing paper down the toilets is : Most of the drain pipes are 3" pipe in CR. Very limited. SEAHAWK

I never thought I'd run into a topic that didn't turn me on in this forum.

Oh, well. I have until Sunday to recover from this...

The toilet paper in the waste basket is common throughout Latin and South America. What is even worse is that many toilets in South America do not have toilet seats, and that is gross! All hotel rooms that I have stayed in do have seats; however, at an InterContenintal Hotel I was at I left the lounge for the banos and no seat and the prior person had sh*t all over it.

Another thing regarding the paper issue is it a bad habit to break, I have had freinds and gringas visit my home from South America, and have told them that it is propper to flush it here; and always it winds up in the basket.

Southern Europe has the same problem.

I lived in Sicily for a few years. After about 3 months living in my first apartment, I walked out my door one morning to see a huge tanker truck with tubes leading into my neighbor's house. I followed the tubes to the back yard where all the neighbors were standing around an open tank that they were pumping out into the truck.

They all began yelling at me and gesturing with typical Sicilian exuberance. I didn't speak Italian well at the time, but it didn't take me long to figure out that the stupid American didn't have any better sense than to put toilet paper into the toilet!!!

Took me a while to get used to it. But, when in Rome.

This is addressed in a book I read before I went to CR. It is called Culture Shock! A Guide to Customs and Etiquette - Costa Rica. I think it is part of a series on all different countries. The book is interesting, but won't help you much because it doesn't focus on what a monger would need to know.

Anyway, it says:
Don't flush toilet paper down the bowl! Water pressure in Costa Rica is poor, and blockages frequent. A bin is provided in every bathroom for used paper.

I stayed in the Amon Plaza, which is a nice hotel. It is supposed to be the CR equivalent to a 5 star hotel. When I checked out the bathroom there was a small bin with a plastic bag and one of those plastic covers which slides open and closed. My first day, I met an American guy who lived in San Jose and figured I would ask him because I was a little unclear if it was necessary to use this in a modern hotel. He had no idea what I was talking about. He thought I was crazy, or at least seriously misinformed. After that I never thought about using that bin. There are probably gringos who live there causing all kinds of problems, but at least their bathrooms smell a little better.
