Costa Rica uses (all 3 providers) 850 umts for 3g data, and 1800 MHZ for gsm.
If the phone is sold by at&t in the states, it will work down here as their network in parts of the states uses the same frequency. As others have said, the phone will need to be unlocked.
You can actually use pre-paid blackberry service here now, (as well as the normal pre-paid internet service), costs about 1-3 dollars a day depending on the option used. If you are going to be in san jose the whole time, i would suggest using movistar or claro, but if you are going to travel around the country at all, i would suggest ice as their coverage is better.

Can anyone educate me about the requirements for a Blackberry 3g phone to work in SJ. Can it have a sim card added like a std. cell phone? I assume it must be quad band GMS, and an international version. I find some that will work on At&T type service. What service exists in SJ?
I never even use a cell phone now that I am retired, except when visiting CR. My favorita has requested a used Blackberry and doesn't seem to be aware of the requirements, so can not tell me what she needs! Since she never asks for anything, and usually turns down any offers to bring her gifts, I want to get the correct phone.
Please advise and thanks in advance for sharing your knowledge!
