So this friend of mine thought he had a 90 day visa, but as he was getting ready to make his border run he glanced at his passport and saw that he had only been given 60 days. He'd overstayed a month.

His plan was to go to Nicaragua, and come back--and that's what he still plans to do. What's your best guess as to what happens to him at the border? Fine? How much? And will they let him back in three days later?

Any thoughts--beyond, "get residency"--for how he can handle his immediate situation?

I am not sure how the laws work now and I am sure other guys can tell you, but I have over stayed my visa many times and they usually don't say anything. Only once have I had a problem and it was because I stayed over a year and a half. So I don't think they will give him a hard time. Now hopefully someone who knows the law will tell us for sure.

Well my friend got back and nothing happened.

They stamped him through leaving apparently without noticing he'd overstayed 30 days, and coming back they gave him the regular unmarked stamp that allows 90 days.

He did say the border was extremely busy. He stood in line for three hours on the Costa Rica side.

He also confirmed what somebody else mentioned about Tica bus. If you sit in the back the fumes from the bathroom do get to one. Request a seat up front, or take Nica bus which makes a pit stop and seems to have their sanitary procedures under better control.
