Taking an afternoon walk to AutoMercado and decided to walk a little different way. Well, I found Marrueco's. Do they still have chica action? I finally found Bar Poas. And I found some cheap soda/ hole in the wall local eating spots close to Poas. Also found a couple of dive looking Tico bars along the way. Productive trip in all. Have been in the mood to hang in cheap local bars again, but hate walking way downtown to my spot, El Gigante. Never know what you might find around the next corner. :D

Part of the fun of SJO or any urban area IMHO.

Damn I thought from the title that this post was going to be very different. I thought TW was going to issue a warning NOT TO take the same route for fear that you could be followed by the bad guys here in SJ.

There are a dozen or more tico spots within a few blocks of HLH, DR and SL

I have a wicked craving for chicharones tonight! Might have to see if any of those little spots have them. That would be deadly if I found a good place for chicharones so close to home.

And I don't care how cheap the beer is. I've never had worse hangovers than imperial/Pilsen hangovers. Skunk beer.

Me too, but like a dope I keep drinking it, in fact I love Imperial.

Here in Colombia, "it pays to vary your route" goes without saying. Yes, the area just west of Parque Morazan is a treasure trove of inexpensive sodas and bars... are all within a short walking distance of standard hangouts like SL, HLH, DI and Amistad. Although Bar Poas does not get much press on here, it is a no-frills ex-pat bar that serves up good, inexpensive food and drink...and lots of ex-pat camaraderie.

Looked like a good crowd in there yesterday. Didn't stop in because I had my backpack and groceries. Think I might go grab a beer around 5 and check it out.

TW, we are adding chicharones to the menu this week. We tested them yesterday and are working on a set of three dipping suaces to accompany them as well as traditional squeezed lime.

That little colombian soda next door to Bar Poas is one of my favorites. You can get a great casado for a small price.

There are lots of places to get chicharrones, but at some of them they're incredibly greasy.
