I think the title of this thread is not accurate.

It sounds like they were just local bookies who used a website to make their clients' bets. They didn't get in trouble for making internet bets. They got in trouble for a gambling conspiracy, meaning they were taking bets. I don't see how they could make money this way. :? :? :? Idiots. It doesn't sound like they are involved with the actual gambling website. This doesn't really have to do with Costa Rica, they are just a couple of wanna-be bookies.

"In their plea agreements, the two men admitted to being involved from March 2007 to August 2009 in an extensive sports wagering operation."

They indeed weren't just local guys making private bets on 'Sunday's Game'. They were bookies.

Two Scottsdale men have been sentenced to probation and community service for their involvement in an internet sports gambling conspiracy.

When the feds go after a bookmaker they rip him a new one. The laws are extraordinarily punitive. That these guys got probation suggests that Orange is right. They set up a pay-per-head account with a Costa Rica call center and took some bets from friends. The feds stumbled across them, had to do something, and gave them a no-pain plea deal.

These fools were taking people's money and placing the bets online. If the bet won, the gambling website paid. If the bet lost, gambling website got paid. How did they profit from this? I'm guessing they were charging some extra vig. Small potatoes, that's why they didn't get jail. Risk not worth the reward.

Possible they were getting paid as affiliates. I know some that do this receive 25%-50%. Not something I would want to fool with in the States.
