When I went down in Sept, the "old" 2k and 3k bills were not accepted - was not a huge issue; I just took the old bills to a bank and exchanged them for the new ones - yeah, you have to do so but its not really an issue except for having to go to a bank to do so - are you saying that you are out of luck if you have the old bills; are you saying the bank(s) will not exchange them for the new ones?

Its CR so anything is possible, but somehow I doubt the banks will refuse to exchange the old bills for the new - post back if you have different info.

Also - this is a great question for Irish Drifter - hey, ID - your phone is ringing :)

Hello....

I really can not give an unqualified answer that question. Based upon the link provided, which is from Inside Costa Rica, they state the bills are worthless on November 1. This contradicts earlier reports, including their own, that the bills could be exchanged at the Central Bank of Costa Rica after November 1. Inside does not write any news articles rather they take articles from the Spanish press and translate them and the print them as their own. However Inside is not known for being error free in their translation from Spanish to English. I believe they have made an error based on this

http://www.amcostarica.com/062111.htm

This states, as Inside did also on other occasions that the notes would no longer be exchanged at commercial banks beginning November 1 but would be exchanged at the Central Bank in San Jose. My opinion is the bills will not have lost their value on November 1 but will be a bit more inconvenient to exchange if you still have some.

From ID's AMCOSTARICA article dated June 21:

"....Soon to be released is the 5,000-colon bill that will be 139 millimeters wide or nearly 5.5 inches."

Has the new 5000 colone bill been issued, and if so.......what is the expiration date on the old ones?

The new 5 and 10 mil notes are scheduled for release November or early December. I have not seen any information on the dates they will no longer be accepted for commercial transactions or the date when the banks will no longer exchange them.

Rightly so they were no longer valid for commercial transactions months ago. If you had any you had to take them to a bank and exchange them and you had until November 1 to do that. You must now take them to BCCR (Banco Central Costa Rica) to exchange them for new bills.

It was September 1 that the old $1K and $2K notes were no longer accepted. I arrived Aug. 31 and used old $1K and $2K notes. Much to my surprise, the very next day (Sept. 1), stores were not accepting them.
No worries, on my return to SJO, went upstairs to the BAC and exchanged them.

your 5k and 10k notes are still good. not sure when they're being replaced but it doesn't matter because i'm sure the date will change :)

there's also a new 20k bill. try to avoid them unless you're actually going to spend 20k or more in one spot. many places won't or can't make change for them.

The new 5 & 10k notes were scheduled for release late this month. It has been announced that will be pushed back until sometime next year.
